Hey FishProfiles.com,

Recently, my friend gave me his unwanted fish, however, not only were they unwanted, but they were UNKNOWN. Neither of us has any clue as to what species they are. You can take a look for yourself at two high quality photos found here:

http://au.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/lachlanpratt/album?.dir=/21ed&.src=ph&.tok=phEnNiBBy3lPd5xc

(sorry about the large file sizes)

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated, as I'd like to know what the best conditions to keep them in are and if it's possible to breed them. Thanks in advance.

No ideas at all...interesting looking fish though. How large are they? Were they kept with any other fish previously? (wondering about temperament)

Looks to be a goby of some sort. Since there are thousands of species of goby-type fish and I am by no means an expert, I can't go any further than that.:%)

topher02, you're spot on the money. That pic from the link you posted looks so much like the fish I have it's not funny. Mine seem a bit bigger though, with darker colours and more defined features (such as a more ounced bulge on the upper head).

Thank you all for helping out as I really did have no clue whatsoever as to what they were. I previously thought they were freshwater flathead! Now the challenge will be to see if I can work out how they ended up in my friends' tank originally ... ? Any ideas?

Theresa_M,

I had them in a tank with my other goldies, only to find that a few days later one of the feeder goldies' eyes was missing! I presumed that this was the work of the new fish and promptly took them out and put them into their own tank where my goldies would be safer and I could watch the new fish while I study.

It turns out that not only did they suck an eye off, but thay were also having a good chomp on its fins too. You might think I'm a bit sick, but its hilarious watching the cyclops fish swimming in circles and bumping into the other fish / aquarium glass.

Anyway, all in all they're interesting to watch, as they like to hide under a rock formation all day. They seem to tolerate each other REALLY WELL, so maybe that's a signal that I might be able to breed them soon enough. Oh, and they're about 8cm from head to end of tail.

I'd be happy to answer any more questions.
