I didn't buy the gold fish just for the purpose of cycling the tank, just to start off with...I already had him. But I'm wondering, can one little goldfish make enough ammonia to properly cycle a 27 gallon tank? I know they are messy fish, but should I put my other goldfish in there as well? Also, how much should i feed them when cycling? I have been feeding just once a day.

IMO one little gold fish will cycle the tank. It will take a very long time tho. When you say add you other goldies, just how many are we talking about? Adding more will help speed things along. Are you using anything like NI-Cycle?

Or even Multi-Purpose Bio Support (from Big Als) may help you also.. I'd say use about 5 goldfish if you have them, or throw about 5 danios in with your goldfish..

Goldfish get to be far to large for a 27g... A fancy goldfish needs at least a 55g, and a common goldfish needs a 100+g pond.

Additionally to what john.stone mentioned many of the cheap feeder goldfish are often kept in very, very poor conditions and cary a lot of disease. Not something you want in a new tank.

There are more than enough other options for cycling the tank, fishless cycling with plain ammonia is the cheapest, or add Cycle or Biospira which are the bacteria you want to grow packeged in a nice neat little bottle, or zebra danios who are often much much healthier than goldfish.

Biggest reason not to use them though, is what john.stone already pointed out.

HTH a bit .
