I picked up this fish that had been adopted from my lfs this week. #1 because i liked him, and #2 he was a steal, $1.50. He is about 3 1/2 inches an appears thats how big he is going to get. He is skinny like some sort of tetra and has horozontial black rather thick stripes going down his shiny and pale orange body. She sold him to me for the price of a Giant Daino because she claimed it was. I didnt think so and I still cant find a picture that looks like him, I am going to search for my camera and see if I can get a pic of him but can anyone help?

Thats a negative Joe. He does have a rather tall and long dorsal fin that is far back on his spine and covers and takes the place of where the adipose fin should be. He is extremley active right now too so that was an obsticle in seeing if he did...

Ooh, Joe knocked out a good one. That knocks out the catfishes and, importantly, the tetras and similar fish. It also knocks out salmon and smelts, but I don't think any of us were considering them...

As I churn this over in my head, here's a battery of questions... How many horizontal stripes? Are the stripes thicker than the background color, thinner, or are the stripes of black and the background the same width? Where are the pelvic fins (the paired fins on the underside of the body)? Are they near the gills, or are they far back? Any TINY whiskers? Which way is the mouth pointed, up, forward, or down? He is skinny like WHAT sort of tetra: neon? rummynose? Or did you mean the fish is skinny in the way a Lemon Tetra is skinny, but still has a deep body? Where's he hanging out, by the surface, midwater, over the bottom, or right on the bottom?

BTW, score! I love picking up fish that the LFS has no idea what it is.

I thought about Anostomus or Julidochromis, but neither of these fish fit the description exactly. I also considered barbs or rasboras, but I don't know of any barbs or rasboras that match the striping description, though. Striping IS very characteristic of danios, but Danio species are all too small and I don't know of any Devario species that have actual black stripes...

I went through Cyprinids at Fishbase and Phoxinus sp. and Puntius johorensis might fit the description, but their dorsal fins are not correct...

Shini you nailed it! It is of the Devario species. Devario aequipinnatus to be exact. I said black stripes but he was pretty dark at the time and hiding in a tough spot to see. But his stripes are auctually a greyish-green i guess. Thanks for your help man, have you thought about a profession in FBI or missing children services?

That's somewhat of a surprise, considering Devario aequipinnatus is, in fact, the Giant Danio. That said, they are known to grow up to 6" and, like other danios, like to be in groups. With that in mind you'd probably need a larger tank than a 20 gallon to house a school of adults.

LoL, my skills aren't that great, I just like trying to ID fish.
