Swords usually don't get more than 3 inches, though I have heard of some that get 5. I've never had any get that big. Males are smaller and look nicer, you could get a bachelor group. Swords can be nippy but I don't think it could bother any of your stuff. The Loaches hide alot and the danios are fast and the cat presumably hangs at the bottom.

Have fun, Mike

A Pearl Gourami will do great in your tank.

Take care of that CAE.......

Don't get all males if you are getting swordtails. I had three males in my tank once that I had raised from babys and as soon as they where about a year old they would start attacking each other!

At any rate if you are looking for a center piece fish how about a Dwarf Gourmi I understand they are quite pretty and only get 2.5 inchs when full grown?? I think thats right.... not 100% certain on that though.

John, wow. That's one hungry firemouth. Did it eat all those fish one day while you were at work?

Indeed it did, at first it would just flare at them and one day I guess it realized how big it was and decided to own the tank. The only things that lived were my tiger barbs and red tailed shark.

Also... Firemouths can get to be 6-7 inches long... Which IMO is too big for a 30g.

I have a 30G Extra High Tank

Don't add anything, you're already too stocked and the danios probably aren't happy in that small of a tank.

you are right Mono's are brackish in the wild, in captivity they are fresh, brackish, salt it dose not matter they will even breed in fresh. If the Mono's were to get too big for the tank they would be worth lots for trade back value

Alright, as many of you may know, I have a 30G Extra High Tank.

Current tank mates are...
10 Danio's = 15 Inches Full Grown
2 Kuhlie Loaches = 4 Inches Full Grown
1 Honeycomb Tita = 1.5 Inches Full Grown
1 Chinese Algae Eater = 2 Inches (Probably will not keep him forever, we'll see how his aggression gets, I've already had him for... 6+ months or so, and he's still only 2 inches.

So, that gives me a total of 22.5" of fish to my 30G.

I've been thinking about possibly adding a center peice fish for this tank, something bigger then all the rest, but not something that my danio's will kill *they are a rather rough crowd*
Anyone got any ideas?

Well I certainly don't want anything that will eat my danio's. I have some expensive Glofish in there, don't to have to replace that.

I had another Kuhli, he was actually 3 inches, the other 2 just stayed small, but he got sucked up into the filter for some reason and died *sad*.
I've had these Kuhli's for about 8+ months, and they haven't been growing anymore, I don't think they were even Juvies when I got them, compaired to the younger ones I've seen at most fish stores. Most people I've spoken with whom own Black Kuhlie's say they are only 2-3 inches long, not 4.

My Danio's don't hog the middle of the tank, they hog EVERYTHING, lol. I have some Blue Danio's in there too, and it's that female I'm worried about, she's some what nagging towards other new fish.

As far as the ram goes, is it ok to add just one, or 2, what should I get? And my danio's won't nip their fins? I hope...

Freejoe: I have no idea what a mono is.

As far as the CAE goes, like I said, if he grows to large or becomes aggressive I will either rehome him, or return him to my Cichlid tank. I've had him for 6+ months and so far doing ok. My last one however, he was a stinker, about 4 inches and sooo mean, I only had him for 2 or 3 months.

The Honeycomb Tita is a cat fish, bottom dweller, though he's smart enough to come to the surface and eat all it's food, he's plump and the max out at about 1.5/2". I've had him for... 6+ months as well.

I do NOT have a heater in this tank, some specs.

pH: 7.0
Temp: 73-75 F
Ammonia: 0
NitrItes: 0
NitrAte: 5
Cycled, yadda yadda, I don't know the dH, I've lost my master test kit since we moved 3 months ago, still can't find the darn thing.

Would a sword tail work in this tank, how big do they really get?

The CAE is probably going away once it gets aggressive (at about 4-5" if my experience is indicative). Plenty of room.

Monos, no. They reach six inches, and are brackish water fish. There is not room enough for them, especially since they are so active (as mentioned).

I might argue the space issue. Ten super active, one and a half inch danios (which by the way, are not fully grown), a fish with the potential to reach a foot (not to mention become quite aggressive), two active (at night) loaches that will reach four inches, and a five inch fish that will probably kill its tankmates? I don't know anything about this honeycomb fish, but that firemouth won't fit, even without the honeycomb. That is just my opinion.

what about a couple of Mono's they will streak around chasing each other leaving the rest of your fish alone, they do live in fresh water just fine, the fire mouth would probably find himself some cover hide a lot of the time
