| Colomesus asellus - questions | |
Calilasseia![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() *Ultimate Fish Guru* Panda Funster Posts: 5496 Kudos: 2828 Votes: 731 Registered: 10-Feb-2003 ![]() | I've recently discovered a puffer fish called Colomesus asellus, which lives in Peru. And consequently, I assume, is an Amazonian type fish liking soft, acidic water. Questions I have about this fish are: [1] What is its maximum size? [2] If it happens to be a nice small size (say 2" ) , will it be compatible with South American Characins and Panda Corys, or is this likely to be a disastrous combination? [3]If it is compatible with my existing fishes, will it eat snails like some other puffers do? All information gratefully accepted. ![]() Last edited by Calilasseia at 13-Oct-2004 11:53 Last edited by Calilasseia at 13-Oct-2004 11:53 |

They supposedly reach around 6" (though I've never seen one over 3" ), are boisterous, and, though not particularly aggressive, can be somewhat nippy. I wouldn't risk them with your cories, though, especially the fry. As with all puffers, they appreciate the bi weekly invert snack. Prefers soft, acidic water. They require snails in their diet, several times a week, or as their main food source. Of the puffers, their teeth are the fastest growing, many people have needed to trim their teeth. I wouldn't recommend putting them in with other fish, because they are very unpredictable when it comes to compatibility and fin nipping. Last edited by puffer_archer at 13-Oct-2004 19:43 |

Guess I won't be adding these to my characin and cory aquarium to eat the snails then ![]() I had hoped that this was one of the dwarf puffers, but one can't have everything. By the way, does there exist a dwarf South American puffer that might be compatible with my current inmates (mixed characins & Panda Corys) or is this wishful thinking on my part? |
CeltGirl![]() Enthusiast Posts: 170 Votes: 0 Registered: 08-May-2004 ![]() | You could try a Dwarf Puffer. Like I said in the "puffer fish and semi community" thread, my DP lives with cories, loaches, and guppies. I know a lot of people would disagree with me, but for my puffer, this has been the best setup for him. I don't claim to know everything, and all I can tell you is what is working for my fish right now. |

I think they would be fine, if they have enough roon. I have mine in with cories, large (6" plecos & large cichlids. they would also be ok w/fast-moving fish. Just beware--you will need to be trimming their teeth every 4-6 months after the snails run out. How big is the tank? |

Only thing is, any incoming puffer would have to be a ***dwarf*** puffer because of the current population of inmates. And if I did get a puffer, I'd start cultivating snails in a refugium for it ![]() |
pufferpunk![]() Big Fish Posts: 462 Kudos: 395 Votes: 0 Registered: 21-Feb-2003 ![]() | Well, SAPs grow to 3" max. Exactally what fish are in there already & how big are they? Last edited by pufferpunk at 15-Oct-2004 10:44 |
Calilasseia![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() *Ultimate Fish Guru* Panda Funster Posts: 5496 Kudos: 2828 Votes: 731 Registered: 10-Feb-2003 ![]() | Cardinals(6), Lemons(5), Beckfords Pencils(4), Otocinclus(7) and Panda Corys (8). If that sounds a bit crowded, don't worry, they also have lots of plants, and receive a 25 litre water change twice a week. Which is why my Pandas spawn about once per week and the Lemons have recently joined them! ![]() |

CeltGirl![]() Enthusiast Posts: 170 Votes: 0 Registered: 08-May-2004 ![]() | Carinotetraodon travancoricus- Here you go. There's a profile for them on this site under FW Other. |
pufferpunk![]() Big Fish Posts: 462 Kudos: 395 Votes: 0 Registered: 21-Feb-2003 ![]() | Those puffers are actually way more aggressive than the SAPs. they have been known to go on "fin rides" of fish 20x their size! You need very fast-moving, or armoured fish, or an extremely large tank, to mix thesd puffers with other fish. |
CeltGirl![]() Enthusiast Posts: 170 Votes: 0 Registered: 08-May-2004 ![]() | My DP is actually very peaceful. He hasn't nipped a single fin since he was places in my community tank. He's quite happy feeding right next to my fancy guppies and hasn't shown the slightest amount of aggression. He is sexually mature, so if he was going to be aggressive, it would already show. I'm not saying necessarily all DPs will behave this way, but my experience shows that they do. |

I tried keeping a trio in my 20 community. Big mistake. I lost two rummies and my Bn's fins were in tatters afterwards. |
