How can i get my electric yellows to breed? I have 5 in a 29 gallon tank with a lot of rockwork and caves. I am pretty sure i have 2 males and 3 females but not positive.

Thanks

I find two things work real well for me,

1) double their daily food intake.

2) on an overcast day, just before a rain do a 50% water change.

the first just fattens up the females so they kind feel like their bulky enough to go the 3-5 wks without food, and also produce healthy young.

the second has lots to do with the barametric pressure as in Lk. Malawi the peek breeding season is the rainy season.

Anyways try them out and see how it goes.

Also, you might just find that your 5 yellows in a 29g, just won't spawn. I'd have to say that's because the females simply don't feel secure enough to do so. Most likely due to lack of "free" space.

Good Luck

the way you can tell the diff from males to female is that the male has black on his bottom fin and a black line in the middle of his eye:88)

A very good tip, Armybook...

However, a dominant female will often display the same coloring as a male....
That does work in alot of cases but the only 100% way is to "vent" the fish

I would say frozen or live worms or live bbs those meaty foods help them get ready to breed. As said before water changes often trigger spawning.

Water changing is a must when breeding & raising the fry.

The line on the eye method works 100% from what ive been told from some people. All i do is just feed mine regulary with nothing in particular different when there ready theyll do the deed. Usually they breed after ive done a water change (15-20%) with cooler water. Other than that i do nothing and they breed constantly for me every 3-4 weeks
