I have noticed a very regular occurance. Most days now my congo tetras will spawn. I only have a pair. In the morning the male will relentlessly chase the female and when I get back, the female is skinnier and they both seem to be darker. I want to learn how to breed them but I have no ideal tank. I have a 29(community with congos), 25(con not be used for breeding), 15 (Tiger barbs), 10
(guppies), 5 (white cloud juviniles),2.5 (baby guppies), and 2.5 (3week old white clouds)

These fish are relatively easy to spawn. There are basically two methods, the natural way, and the unnatural way.

In the unnatural way, take a bare bottom tank. And use some kind of large hole screen, I find the egg crate to work well with these fish. It just has to be large enough for the eggs to fall through, and yet to small for the parents to get through. In a bare bottom tank, you will be able to see the eggs after they have spawned. You then remove the parents and watch the fry grow. You will neet very small first foods though. But these fish grow relatively quickly.

In the natural way. You over grow the bottom of your tank with thick plants, like java moss. When you see your Congo tetras spawning, take the parents out later that night. You should see some fry at the surface of the tank in a couple of days. Again, you will need very small first foods. However, if you do not clean the bottom of the tank, and let some detrius build up, you will likely have a colony of infusoria. The addition of several larger snails, will also help to create an infusoria colony. This makes great first foods for these fish.

HTH....
