I had one of my 2" african cichlid dissappear over night. Did a vac and wc today and searched through the whole tank, but nothing. I don't believe he jumped out of the tank. I had other fish die on me before, but none of them dissappearing in a 10 hour period. He had a mild case of ick, but was still active and feeding. There are three snails, a 2" BN, and eight other african around the 2,3,4 inch mark in a 75g. What was the fast you had a fish dissappear?
Thanks...............openwater.

It would be understandable if he was a catfish (I haven't seen my striped raphael in like four months), but it would be hard for a cichlid to disappear like that.

I would check all around the tank, in the filter, and in/under the stand. Suicidal fish have a habit of getting into weird places before keeling over.

Also, I've "lost" fish that were actually just hiding up near the filter, behind the part where the water comes out.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

It's possible that the fish died for some reason and was eaten. I've seen fish completely disappear, only to find a small part of their skeleton a little while later... or never a trace. It can be surprising how quickly tankmates can gobble a body. Plecos are especially notorious for it.

As Cory Addict said, srearch the tank, filter, stand and surrounding area very thoroughly. Check all the decorations in the tank, the gravel, and be on the lookout for any small part of the fish's skeleton, like its skull or backbone.

Sorry for the loss.

It was miracle, I seen the fish today. Yesterday when I wc and vac the tank, I removed the decorations and searched the entire tank. My girlfriend was even watching the bottom and around the tank for the "Dead fish". We search the whole tank. Then there he appeared asmorning. Glad to see the ick is off him and all the rest of the fish, but the cichlid refuses to eat. He is very inactive and not is shown any other signs of illness or disease. He was very active before the ick out break last week and now is hiding lots and never eat all day. I have to kept a close eye on him If I can find his hiding spot.
thanks................openwater
