i had a small rubber band in a convict holding tank, (probably from an old bag) n.e way my hoplo catfish got caught in it, (he did this b4, but apartently there was more than one rubber band) anyway, he got free like i did the first time, but as soon as the rubber band was freed,

one of my convict cichlid males(2'') ate it, and it bent and alittle bit was out of his mouth. i tried to get it from him, but it wasan't working and he ate it. i looked in his mouth and their is no traces of it so it isn't stuck in his troat. what problems are we looking at.

Not sure what's gonna happen to the convict... he might get constipated if it gets stuck inside him, so you might want to try to feed him de-shelled peas (I know that works for constipated bettas, might work for convicts). He might pass it without any problems, but I doubt it...

And yes, fish can choke on stuff. My alpha male Geophagus tapajos tried to eat an otto and it turned sideways in his mouth and he choked to death on the poor thing

BTW, try not to lose rubber bands in your tank, things like this can happen

Not sure about choke to the point of suffocation, I think that'd be tricky what with gills etc, but it could starve if it was stuck in the throat long enough or it could stress out at not being able to dislodge it.

I imagine that it'll pass though. those fishy stomach acids can break down bone so i think it could make a bit of a mess of rubber

Well, should make sure that the stuff is out of this throat.
Won't do him any good long term, just like won't do you any good if you have a rubber band in your throat.

If he is eating, good sign, at least the stuff is not blocking his eosophagus.
Breathing shouldn't be a problem cause the water if filtered out from his gill and oxygen gets across by diffusion.

I've had my saratoga jardini trying to eat from the gravel bed and had a mouthful of gravel. He was spitting out gravel for like 10 minutes.

He is still alive and well, for a long time since that happened.

Good luck!
