Ahhh, you would be right! the 'love monkey'! i'd forgotten about those.
Very interesting species.

hey silverlight - does your comment mean that homosexuality is a little "too much information"???? i'm sure i'm not the only gay person reading this...and no, i'm not taking offense, just that those kind of comments make me and my 'kind' seem like we should still be second-rate citizens... language is power!!

me, the dolphins, higher apes and my fish will be having tea and scones later to discuss the matter...

Ok I've just got to add my 2 cents to this...

I know my guppies are in the same position, chasing each other and all...

But at our Elementary School that I teach at we have a pair of turtles, and I've been wondering would they be able to have any feeling from this? They are always going at it...It's really embarrassing when the parents or someone who doesn't work there sees them...The kids we have convinced that they are only playing leap frog...

Actually, what I learned in an Upper level University Anthropology class is that it is not just humans and dolphins that have sex for pleasure, but also all great apes (orangutans, gorillas, chimps, bonobos, etc), as well as most species of monkey. Meerkats (think Timon from the Lion King) also have been known to engage in sex for pleasure, as well as homosexual behaviour, however the reason for the homosexual behaviour is chalked up to the fact that only 1 pair of meerkats in a group is allowed "reproduction rights" and the rest form same sex f/f m/m pairs, and aid in the raising of the young.

And as for fish: well guppys seem to be a little tooooooo horny for the idea of sex to be just for reproduction!!
hahahahahaha
What other livebearer does it like guppies do? Not a one Ive seen! Hahahaha
sorry just such a funny topic.

I knew about it, but I figured that little detail on Bonobo society was best classified as "too much information".

The specific species of monkey is the bonobo. Bonobos are widely known to use sex as a social tool.

That would have been my 'fourth one'. The more we study Bonobos, the more we discover....for instance, did you know that pretty much 100% of Bonobos participate in homosexual behaviours (as well as heterosexual ones)...it is believed that this is done to build releationships, and strengthen group dynamics for future team-work situations.

DOnt livebearers have sex?

I know egg laying fish dont, since the eggs get fertilized after the eggs are lain.

Also, arent their snails that can produce without having sex?

(Just to let you know, everything "reproduces" which could be considered sex, even plants)

you see the same thing in the dog park all the time - funny thing most people try to break it up even if their pets are spayed/neutered!! (for reference sake: my german shorthaired pointer is always at the bottom of the pack -she's a little submissive!! )

Indeed Bayara,

When I used to work with horses, there were 3 Alsatians there (all desexed), a large male, an energetic female (skinny), and the sweetest of all, a fat, goofy female that was a real "people dog"... the most lovable dog I've ever known, didn't have an ounce of aggression in it's body...

anyway...

long story short, the male was dominant in this "mini pack" and would make the motions of "mounting" the two gals even though he had nothing that was functional as such... the next in the pecking order, the energetic female, seemed to have the same idea, and would prove to the sweet, goofy dog just what her place was in the scheme of things by also mounting her and going through the "motions"...

I have heard similar accounts of male wolves "mounting" subordinate members in a pack (both male and female) and also "acting" as if mating (whilst in a wolf pack, it's usually only the alpha male/female pair who have the "right" to actually reproduce).

Dex

in simple terms... fish do have sex, but they call it reproduction and it is to have offspring..not for pleasure

motobooger - about the dogs: when you see them 'humping everything' it's usually a dominance thing. who's 'on top' (the best)

Before the site crash my paradise fish spawned, there I was with a front row seat, camera in hand. My husband made the fish- comment Amazing to see though.

If you go over to www.cichlid-forum.com, they have video clips of cichlids spawning if you want to see what it looks like. Very interesting viewing. I was watching them and my wife came in and asked me what I was watching. It dawned on me that I was basically watching fish .

The specific species of monkey is the bonobo. Bonobos are widely known to use sex as a social tool. It's hard not to imagine that they enjoy it, otherwise it wouldn't be much use as a social tool.

its hormonally driven in dogs and the like, as it would be in fish.

although partially hormonally driven in humans, we have that higher level of importance and pleasure on top of that.

by the way, its humans, dolphins and a specific species of monkey... and i think Toirtis had a 4th one

i actually bought the mate of a platy i wanted because they were mating in the shop tank. the entire time i had them, i never saw either fish mate with anyone else. they were certainly 'paired'.

hmm I don't know about that humans and dolphins only enjoying sex theory...
Dogs seem to like it..otherwise they probably wouldn't go around humping everything..
And I've seen a documentary about a little bush mouse the when it reaches a certain stage of its like or something it just keeps rooting until it dies...it literally doesn't stop haha..
