My fish seem to watch tv too, but only for a span of a couple of minutes, i think they'd rather watch the news.

My betta stares at the computer screen when I play games. Even when I feed him. I think he is entranced by the colors. If I turn off the game, he goes and eats. So...I dont know. ^_^

My tank is nowhere near a tv so I can't really compent...I think though that it would be the light coming from the tv, much like moths will go toward the tv

Yeah, my betta watches when I play video games. He also flares up against Dr.Pepper cans, but not toward Sprite.

There was a program on television about animals and their intelligence. There was a test, which included a fish (in a tank) watching other fish (of a different species) on television do certain things that weren't characteristic of the species of fish in the tank.

e.g. the fish wouldn't eat white-worms before watching a program of fish eating white-worms, and ate them greedily afterwards.

So, I guess that proves that fish do watch TV to an extent. I know mine do occasionally.

I don't think your question was stupid.

My acara goes to the corner of the tank to watch if the room lights are out. My bettas love any movement...snoopy lil things.

i noticed a strange phenomena the last few days:
when light are off for the night, my two rosy barbs seem to stay close to the glass in a posture that makes the TV best visible for them (they eyes are about perpendicular to the TV. the tank is panoramic). they also become much less mobile than usual.

so do fish like TV?

although this might sound really stupid to even consider, but it isn't really. Biderman found out a neurocognitive mechanism that make us feel good when we have too much visual stimulation (he used a stream of rapidly changing pictures). by "feel good" i mean opiates release in the brain. that's the reason looking at flames is so much fun!
anyway, it would be interesting to see the same effect in creatures that are very very different in their neural architecture.

so, do your fish enjoy TV as much as mine do?

My Brichardi tank is in front of my TV, but i never noticed them watching football. Maybe i'll have to drop them a ball & see what they've learned.

You are a brave person. I noticed this before but didn't dare bring it up for fear of being laught at !

My Tank is at a slight angle to the TV , kind of half facing it. The Panda Cories used to have a hanit of lining up at the front of tank at angle were they were directly facing the TV ! I was convinced they were watching the TV.
When I started contemplating turning on NGC for wildlife programs for them to watch I seriously started to doubt my sanity

But yes something seemed to be attracting them.

My two-eyed parrotfish (and yes, I CAN characterize them that way) watches movies with me, he stares right at the tv the whole time it's on while sitting in the corner of the tank nearest me...

PM/email/msg me if you have any questions/comments regarding me or my knowledge or if you want me to read a thread.

One of my buddies has been contemplating turning the TV so his cichlids can watch it while he's gone. They seem to like the little bit of TV that they already see...

My JD liked to watch me while I was on the computer. If I hadn't fed him he'd start spitting gravel at the side of the tank to get my attention so I'd feed him and then get back to posting on FP

I know that some Oscars like TV. A lady I used to work with had an oscar who's tank was fairly near the TV. When she upgraded her 75 to a 125 so he could have more room to swim in, she had to place it farther from the TV and the oscar threw a hissy fit because he missed watching TV with the family. I remember her telling about how he would go to the tank wall and just be entranced with the shows on the screen. Oddly enough, she said he loved Survivor.

One of my bettas who sits atop my computer desk only watches the screen when bright cartoons are on. Every week he "watches" South Park and my anime shows. So I tend to agree that they are attracted to bright flashy colors as he never "watches" anything else.

They do, but don't give them the remote.

My fish aren't near a tv... but i can see how fish would be atracted to it. Much like bug to light. Wether it be a fascination, chemical in the brain, or you fish just plain like the tv programming, who knows. Just aslong as they don't start complaining about what u watch I think your safe ]
