Well, there are other fish that are interesting to keep. What size is your tank?

Well, since technically it's a Christmas gift, you might as well splurge a bit. I would go for something a bit more rare, such as maybe a school of some uncommon corys or a few Denisoni Barbs.

If your girlfriend likes the oddball-type fish and you have at least a 55 gallon tank, you may want to look into African Knifefish, Peacock Eels, Sleeper Gobies (there are a few different species available), or Polypterus palmas if you can find it. Most of these species require at least some degree of specialized care, but if you are willing to devote the time and patience needed to care for them, they are rewarding fish to keep.

EDIT: Just saw it's a 29 gallon tank. In that case, I would go with a shoal of unusual/uncommon corys, Cyprinids, or tetras. Sometimes some really interesting stuff turns up on AquaBid, if your store doesn't have a very large selection.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

seeing it's an EARLY xmas gift, you'll also have to buy something for the actual day so you don't feel like you're missing out....

Now you have even more time to figure out what you want to keep. Then you can figure out what size tank you will need and maybe even save up for a bigger one than you had planned on getting.
