Howdy all! I would like to set up my hex 5 again, and am wondering what y'all think of the following ideas:

-Lamp eye killi fish
or
-Threadfin rainbows
or
-neon blue dwarf rainbows
or
rasbora hets

I want a nice small group of one species. I may want to add ghost shrimp in the tank as well.

Any ideas as to what live plants may be able to grow/stay small enough for this size tank? I am planning on using a sand bottom. I have had planted tanks before, but never with sand.

So, any ideas? Suggestions? Things I should definately NOT do?

I'm so adjective, I verb nouns!

I wouldn't put a schooling fish in a 5 gallon, especially a hex. The killis sound like a good idea though.

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.

Personally I think a 5g is too small for the neon blue dwarf rainbows or rasbora hets since they're schooling fish. I'd go with either the killies or threadfins.

Exclamation point or emerald dwarf rasboras are smaller and might work if you could find them.

When the tank was set up previously, I had three cardinal tetras and three mirror blue tetras in it. It got very regular water changes. The fish were fantastically healthy until the temp in my apartment rose and the mirror blues died (I was on vacation and my roomie didn't notice). I gave the cardinals to a friend (who promptly killed them, grrr) but anyways, I would like a few nice fish... I've been eyeballing the killis, would they work with plants and/or shrimp?

Yes, they'd work fine with plants and shrimp. I have my killis with both and they're fine.

There just isn't room for a schooling fish, especially in a hex tank. Plus, those rainbows aren't that small.

Yah, I've had the rainbows before... I guess you're right. I'll have to see if the LFS has any, they're not common but MAN are they STRIKING to look at!

Thanks!

Any ideas what plants to use that would be smallish?

The first plants that come to mind are crypts, anubias, and java fern. Those just grow slowly though, I suppose. It really depends on what kind of lighting you have in the tank.
