| Eggs - I Think | |
scott-c![]() Fingerling Posts: 17 Kudos: 22 Votes: 1 Registered: 11-Oct-2004 ![]() | I have noticed on the underside of some thick Val (long thick grassy looking plant) what I think are a clump of eggs. They are clear and feel sort of jelly fish like to touch. The nest is fairly small, about the diameter of a fingernail and when I look at them from the below you can see the individual eggs glisten in the light. They are attached to plant that is floating on the surface. I am presuming they are eggs, my tank is 130 litre and hold Pearl Guarami, peppered & sterbai corys, neon & penguin tetras, platies and albino sharks and a couple of snails (big golden ones) I know they are not from the platies (she has already given birth a couple of times. :-)) My thoughts are the Pearl Guaramies but the eggs dont appear to be in a buble nest. Could they be from the tetra's if in fact they are eggs? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. |

Are the eggs clumped together as if it was deliberate or are they simply close together? I don't know enough about snails to rule them out, but I'm pretty sure that when they lay eggs, they are clumped together tightly. |

They are laid in a jelly like clump, while Cory eggs are deposited on various locations, sometimes on glass, sometimes on plants, but you can see each Cory egg distinctly. |

The jelly like substance is what keeps the other fish from eating them, it has a nasty taste to them. You maybe lucky and have some new snails. Not knowing the type you have, I can tell you that it will probably take between 1-4 weeks for these to "hatch". If it is a fish egg, it will "hatch in less than a few days. Congrats! There is always a bigger fish... |

I have two Golden snails in my tank, they have the swirl on the side of their shells, I am not exactly sure of their correct name. I also have some small black snails that I always seem to acquire when I buy new plants. They have the swirl at the back of their shell and the guy at LFS said these are best to taken out the tank. Is it possible that a snail can lay a clump of eggs larger than its body size, at least twice the size. If the are the bad snails I will discard but if the are the golden ones I might try and keep. Thanks again ![]() |
