I've got an empty 2.5 gallon tank sitting around and I need some ideas of what to put in it. I thought about putting a female betta in there and attempting to breed with the male betta that I already have. However, from what I've read about breeding bettas, a 5 or 10 gallon tank would be better suited for that. Someone out there have any ideas?

you cant breed in a 2.5, as the ammount of fry will make the water bad very easily. the common amount 200-300, if you do it right you can have 400-500.

A 10 gallon is a good size, and then have a 55 gallon ready for the fry when you move them over.

Conditioning is key, make sure you condition both breeders with live fatty foods.

For the 2.5 gallon, you should just get a white cloud minnow school. Along with a ADF or a ghost shrimp.

Breeding bettas needs alot of research, and isnt as simple as getting a female and getting a male and just dumping them together. I see alot of fishkeepers do this and wonder why they messed up.

I disagree with this. WCMMs are fairly active fish, so I wouldn't keep them in anything less than a 10, not to mention if you try to fit 6 -- the minimum amount of WCMMs you should keep together -- of ANY fish into a 2.5, you're going to be horribly overstocked. Frankly, there aren't many fish you can keep in a 2.5 gallon. You could maybe, and I stress maybe, get away with a cherry barb pair, but I personally wouldn't do it. I'd suggest something like a shrimp tank.

A 2.5g is way too small for white clouds. I have no idea why people started suggesting such small tanks for white clouds. It's insane. I'd actually suggest more like a 20g. These are not that tiny of fish and they are extremely active along with being schoolers. Even if they just sat there 5-6white clouds does not fit in a 2.5g. If they actually swim they barely fit in a 10g. It's about like putting danios in a tank that small.

There's not many fish I'd recommend aside from the betta. The inverts or dwarf frogs are the best for such tiny tanks. I'd just do a planted shrimp tank. Then again I don't like messing with tanks that small in the first place so I'd end up getting a 5g to be less restricted.

I wouldn't wanna put white clouds in a small tank either. I think I might just do a betta and an adf. I'd be pretty much fully stocked with that wouldn't I? Maybe I could add a mystery snail after that. Any good techniques for getting the bloodworms to the frog without the betta getting them?

I would suggest keeping it either as a clean hospital tank or maybe a single male betta or cherry shrimp....

No WCMMs ! Betta and a ADF would be nice, you could just get 2 ADF's, it would be less crouded, or maybe 2 and a snail.

buy a 10g tank to breed your bettas and keep the female in the 2.5 for when they're not breeding? =D

I'm about to get a 2.5g with betta (crosses fingers) and may try to do something like that actually! maybe. =D i'm just going to put my adf in with the betta so that he only has to compete with the betta for food, not the entire tank of food crazy platys. I think it will be good with just the two.
