Hey all,

At the moment, I am feeding my 30cm Saratoga Jardini frozen wholefish as his main diet. Just wondering feeding fish like that with smaller fish bones, scales, head etc. Won't it hurt my saratoga's guts or slice his gut open?

Anyone else feed frozen wholefish to their fish? Any comments?

Regards,
James

Arowana are carnivorous, there should be NO worries about their stomach being adapted to handling fish matter. Arowanas are also known to eat frogs and birds, so something like fish are no problem to digest. Just defrost the frozen fish before feeding and let it chomp'em up. Variation will be nice, though; the Arowana can't get all of its nutrients from just the same fish.

As long as the feeder fish dont exceed the length of the aro's head and they are thawed properly there will be no problems. Whole fish are a much better nutritional balance than pieces of fish flesh minus the bones and guts anyway.Your jardini has to get the vitamins and calcium from somewhere. Frozen fish will be low in b vitamins however, so make sure he gets some fresh or vitamin balanced artificial foods occasionally.Even the odd frog or small mammal isnt out of the question, and livefoods like crickets supplied by reptile shops will be accepted too.You can feed the crickets on fish flake and oranges 24 hours before giving them to the jardini, and that solves a lot of nutritional problems.
