I belive for strictly ease of use and cost that HOB are the "best". They require only minor maintenance and are very effective imo. Although in some situations there are other filters that are a better choice, but for the cost and user friendlyness of these filters they get my vote.

They are the only type of filter I have used, and they are the only type I will ever use. In particular, the Penguin brand filters are my favorite because of the bio-wheels. They are the cheapest in every way, except quality(which is very good IME). Their GPH per dollar, is by far the best option.

i have a couple of aquaclear 200s and find them very user friendly, i also found a place (FINALLY) where the filter media is fairly cheap! so HOB power filters all the way!

HOBs cost nearly as much as canisters here so i vote canister, and they aren't that hard to clean

My fluval cut my cycle time in half by adding more bio to the media baskets. The bio wheels have to be my second choice.

Every filter has its niche, but a canister works best for me.

I have two power filters, and they seem to do an excellent job, albeit they can get a bit too splashy for the fish sometimes.

While I think HOB power filters are the best generally, it really all depends on what you are using the tank for. A HOB doesn't work well fro breeding fish. The fry get sucked into the filter and die. It all depends on what the tank is for

Using cost versus filtering ability, I think HOB's are the best for the most common sizes of tanks (under 90 gallons). Once we begin reaching larger tanks that are over that size, I think canisters become the most effective versus cost...

PM/email/msg me if you have any questions/comments regarding me or my knowledge or if you want me to read a thread.

Ok in your opinion. What is the best type of filter? (as in just best for general filtering, tank size excluded)

I really like HOB filters, particularly the Marineland penguin and emperor lines. They are simple with few parts that can break and also easy to clean.
