I really like my HOB filters (emperor) They seem to do a really good job of keeping the tank clear.

in particular Aquaclears (500 especially). I should point out that the only other type of filter besides a HOB power filter that I've ever used is an UGF which I really don't care for.

I choose not to vote because my best filter choice depends on what tank set up I am refering to.

That would be a vote for other. Welcome to the site!

I think that the hob filters are more user friendly.

I choose not to vote because my best filter choice depends on what tank set up I am refering to. For my planted tanks (which includes most of my tanks)I love cannister filters and internal filters. They are quiet, have excellent biofiltration, and let me create a mirror effect with the surface of my tank. For my oscar tank, however, HOB's are the easiest to keep clean. I sacrifice silence for filters that are easy to get at frequently. Also, I swear my oscar would clog the cannister in a matter of minutes. Then for my fry tanks and QT tank, sponge filters seem to work the best for providing minimal current for very young or very sick fish. So, as you can see my favorite filter just depends on what the goals of the tank are.

I love my HOB filter (AquaClear 500). I supplement it with a powerhead (AC50) running a quick filter underneath.

[vote]Canister Filter[/vote]
I would say when it comes to sheer amount of filter media and passes through that amount of media per hour, I would say canisters win out hands down!
I run a fluval 204, and am going to be adding either a fluval 404 or a Rena Filstar XP3 to my 90g soon.
However! I do run a HOB Cascade 200 on my 25g and I have been incredibly impressed with its capabilities! When it comes to cheapness of media though, the cascade drops to the bottom into the "Expensive" category - cartridges run 15 bucks a peice, and need to be replaced once monthly, and I dont know how much for the sponge.
I am on the other hand not at all impressed with the aquaclear mini I am running on my 10g with only fry in it. It is not a good filter, it does not have good pass through rate, the water flows over without filtration, and the media clogs very very easily.
If I am going to purchase a new filter: Canister 100%.

Are cannisters better filters in theory? Sure. But in the real world, where cleaning a power filter is 10,000 times easier than cleaning the average cannister, HOBs are just a better choice. Besides, I'd rather have three big Aquaclears or a couple of Emporers on a tank than one not-quite-big-enough cannister that runs the same price as those combos!

best for what exactly??

i like them all in certain situations.

I mean, i love cannisters, but on a 3 gal betta tank?

Or i love UGFs but on a 6 foot goldfish tank?

etc etc etc.

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett

"Best" is a rather loose term, I based my vote on what has worked for me these past few years, has been the cheapest and easiest to maintain. Most effective I'm sure goes to cannister, however I doubt many of us have the $100's to spend on one for each of our tanks.
