Got my first ADF today, I bought some sinking frog pellets he should like. Anything else I should know? What can I give him as a treat? Thanks!

ADFs will eat anything that sinks to the bottom of the tank. I feed my ADFs HBH Frog Bites, Hikari Sinking Wafers, and Wardley Shrimp Pellets. When I had the ADFs in a small 2 gallon tank, I dropped some bloddworms on the surface of the water, and the frogs actually swam up and ate from the surface. But since being in a 10 gallon, they have never done that. All they do is search for food on the ground.

Thanks T/A, I have HBH Frog Bites, and I have Hikari SInking wafers for my pandas, maybe I will try dropping one of those in there. I have bloodworms to feed my community tank, I'll probably try those as well. I read somewhere that they need to be fed live food twice a week, such as blackworms...is this true?

i have had my adfs since december, and have only fed them live fed a few times, earthworms chopped up from the yard. They do well on prepared food. Mine eat shrimp pellets (love it! ), tubifex worms, frozen bloodworms, zucchini, and algae wafers.
They are great little critters!

I've had my three ADFs for a little over a year now. And I've never feed them live foods. So, I'd say they don't need any live foods. Give a good mix of prepared foods and they do great.

Your frog should be fed a wide variety of foods, and live being one of them, easiest to use are blackworms/bloodworms. Many people don't realize this animal is a carnivore and does need some live meat in his diet or he will go hunting for something else to get it...FISH. Good luck with your new frog! Hope you enjoy him.

Thanks BA! He didn't make it while I was on vacation, but he hadn't been eating well so I don't think he was so healthy. I'm going to do some research on the live foods before I pick up another.

adf is different from acf (african clawed frog). the acf will not hesitate to make a quick snack of any appropriatly sized fish. their varocious eating habits have been said to be destroying several ponds in parts of California and Florida. their adult size is several times that of an adf, but smaller acfs are easily confused with adfs.

adfs are a very timid frog that will happily gobble smaller worms, flakes, or pellets. they are not strictly carnivorous. they are not demanding, and make awesome additions to most community tanks. i have never seen a real adf eat another fish.

African Clawed Frogs, I have seen some that were absolutely huge! Like the same size as a small plate!!! Just massive, and eating 2 inch long feeder goldfish!
I would avoid that frog for any tank with small fish.
African Dwarf frogs are very peaceful, occassionaly nip a fin or whisker in the frenzy of food, will eat anything you give em, and are quite hardy. I have had 4 or 5 die, they disappeared for awhile and then when I moved I found them under the ornament I have in peices. I still dont know what happened, perhaps they got trapped. One climbed up on the hood lid and got squashed by the lid when I snapped down, so small so invisible against the black hood.
I really like ADFS they are super cute, energetic, active little guys with big appetites! I would definetly reccomend them to anyone with a tank in which they wouldnt get eaten!
Good luck with your next frogs! Try to keep them in a group, they are quite social!
