I'm kind of in a bind because I have a female whose absolutely HUGE with eggs (to the point where they seem to be pressing on her swim bladder... she tends to float and can't swim well) and my guys can't figure out what to do! I had one in there with her for a while, but all he wanted to do was rip her to shreds. I gave up on him and switched to another boy of mine who seems to have more of a clue for what he's doing (SHE does! she dances, she gets under the nest... and the first guy would rip her to shreds!). My only issue is that the second boy is quite small and she's SO huge... even when she wasn't holding eggs, she's quite large (pushing three inches!) while the boy is small. I just don't know what to do except for try to find someone in the Chicago area whose boy knows what he's doing! I'm afraid my female will die if she can't get rid of these eggs... ![]() ~Meow. Its ok if she destroys the nest, hes just going to have to try harder If there is no nest then no problem, many bettas spawn without nests, some make them after spawning and some don't make them at all. Did you get a lot of eggs?? ashley ![]() |
Chino![]() Fingerling Posts: 44 Kudos: 32 Votes: 2 Registered: 01-Dec-2004 ![]() | Ok, so they kept embracing themselves, and eggs fell and Shy went down to pick them up. Does he pick them up all at once, or one at a time. I only saw them once because shortly after that he went berserk on Timid, so I took her out. ![]() |
Chino![]() Fingerling Posts: 44 Kudos: 32 Votes: 2 Registered: 01-Dec-2004 ![]() | Ok well I havent posted much because I was in the process of conditioning Shy and his new girlfriend, Timid! So I conditioned them about four days ago, but Shy had this massive nest on the side of the tank by Timids chimny, so I decided to release her. I did but she did something that made Shy and I hearts drop to our feet, she started to destroy it! So then I put her back in her chimny. Then a day later I saw her bars come up and she was trying to get to the nest! So I let her out at around 10 oclock at night. I fell asleep around 1, but when I woke up, I couldnt believe my eyes! Shy and Timid were under where the nest used to be, and she was doing that "Im ready to embrace" thing, but theres no nest! A few seconds later I see Shy franticly trying to make a nest, and so far they have embraced twice! I dont know whether I should let them be, or put Timid in her chimny and wait for Shy to put the nest back up? ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Chino![]() Fingerling Posts: 44 Kudos: 32 Votes: 2 Registered: 01-Dec-2004 ![]() | Getting a few cultures alternating is a great idea! I read about it some where but I didnt know what other live fish food could be grown, and about the egg shells getting caught, thanks Cory! So far I need: -Melafix -Binder Portfolios (dividers) -Air line tubing (maybe) -Air pump (maybe) -3 way gang valve (maybe) -Plants -10g tank -FEMALE! The reason I said maybe to some of them is because I dont know if I should make my own BBS Hatchery or keep the one I have, which was $8.99 ( SF Bay "Shrimpery" , and comes with 3 bags of food. On the other hand, I could save a lot of money if I keep the one I already have instead of making my own. Thoughts anyone?Last edited by Chino at 09-Dec-2004 20:43 |

I found them very easy to grow and maintain, without a lot of maintenance and fuss. If you play your cards right, you would get a starter culture from this place about a week before you bred your fish. Then, a week later, get a second culture going. Every week, you throw out one of the cultures and start a new one. I don't breed bettas, but have dealt with egg la [link=http://www.livefoodcultures.com/]http://www.livefoodcultures.com/" style="COLOR: #C000C0[/link]. This is where I bought mine. These are really cool and if you throw out one set each week and replace (alternating), you will never experience the smell of microworms gone afoul ![]() One thing to caution you on with bbs. The shell casings can kill fish if they get caught in the gut. There are DIY methods of removing the shell before you hatch, or your kit may adequately separate them. I tried once dealing with them, but didn't set a heater up or anything to accelerate the process. Unless you can get it really warm (like 80F), it will take forever. The microworms don't need to be in light or dark and temp doesn't have that much effect, other than cooler temps slow down reproduction a little. You can even keep them in the fridge if they are growing too fast. |
Chino![]() Fingerling Posts: 44 Kudos: 32 Votes: 2 Registered: 01-Dec-2004 ![]() | Hey, as some of you may know me, I recently got a male Betta. And for some spontaneous reason I feel like breeding seems fun....?! Is that how others of you felt? Anyways, before I start even with conditioning, I want to have all of the right equipment to do this. For example: -Breeding tank (2.5 gallon good enough?) -Females own tank -Female (obviously!) -Fry Food (bbs, microworms, cooked eggyolk) -Bubble nest "helper" Okay, so Ive studied the guide to breeding Bettas from the site, and I know exactly what to do, but I have a few questions - Is a 2.5 gallon sutible, or should I get a 10 gallon? - How could I make a divider for a 2.5 tank, or even a 10? But you can buy liquid fry, which is drops you put in the tank. It will help with it. I use that for the first day or so. ashley |

Its so easy, just buy the eggs seperatly and not in the little packets that come with it- its cheaper that way. Just hatch the eggs in a jar then dump the jar into the hatchery, fill the little clear cup thing with fresh water and wait like 1/2 hour or so. The bbs will go into the freshwater and you can then just feed them to the fry. oh and if your gonna get plants then live is best. It will help provide infuorsia (i can never spell that right) for the fry to feed on. Java moss is best, imo ashley Last edited by ontariobetta at 05-Dec-2004 21:26 |
Chino![]() Fingerling Posts: 44 Kudos: 32 Votes: 2 Registered: 01-Dec-2004 ![]() | Okay, thanks! So I just came back from the petstore, and got some betta fix remedy, it seems to me that my betta had some fin rot, not a lot. Anti-Bacteria for any fry that might get bacterial infection. I also got some Maroxy, and Im not sure if the anti bacteria or maroxy alone is enough, so I got them both, but unless they are both the same, then Ill save some money and return the unessesary one. I also bought a San Francisco Bay Brand BBS Shrimpery, and honestly I dont know how to use it (got some BBS Eggs too). If anyone knows how to make your own Hatchery please do help me, so I could return this too if theres no need. And last thing I got was Hikari First bites. Then I went to a craft store and got some stuff for my breeding tank. A small pot for my female betta to hid in (going to get plants also),and I got a Plastic Canvas for the tank divider. So that leaves me: -10 gallon tank -Cup for bubblenest, or maybe some of that fruit stuff Calla uses -Female Betta (haha) -Jar for female -Filter (with fry safe suction thing, anyone know what is required and how to set it up?) -Heater -Thermometer Edit: I forgot I got a small 1 gallon bucket so that I can put the fry in while Im changing the water, and this type of sponge that has a handle on it so I can clean the tank. ![]() Last edited by Chino at 05-Dec-2004 20:46 Last edited by Chino at 05-Dec-2004 20:47 Last edited by Chino at 05-Dec-2004 21:00 |

Some are really aggressive and will kick the crap out of eachother and others are ok. Its kinda a hit and miss thing. But i wouldn't put 2 in a 5gal, just not a whole lot of room. It would be ok if they were buds and all but other than that no. If you are gonna keep females together its best to keep a few, like 4+. That way the picking on gets spread around and not just on one. ashley |
Chino![]() Fingerling Posts: 44 Kudos: 32 Votes: 2 Registered: 01-Dec-2004 ![]() | Yeah, after reading numerous other posts and other websites as well as this one, Ive read that a 10 gallon is the way to go for a more successful spawn in terms of keeping peace throughout the tank. Plastic canvas was another idea I got, but thanks for helping me out. Now I just have to go get the measurements. Theres one thing Im still fuzzy about, and that is it okay to put females together, or not?? This seems to be a sort of 50-50 case. I need to know whether or not I could put 2 females in a tank of maybe 5 gallons or larger? On the light note, Ive read in a few posts in this forum about a happy betta makes bubble nests, and I thought to myself how come my betta hasnt done that? Then I said to myself maybe he isnt happy with his home. So I turned the heat up a few degrees, and gave him a some treats before bed. When I woke up this morning, I opened the cover, and "lo and behold" there was a small sort of colony of bubbles on the edge of the tank! And I thought maybe it was just some bubbles from the plant. So I go and brush my teeth, about 5 minutes later, and I see some more bubbles around the edge of the tank! It seems to me that he does it when Im not around. |

As for dividers all you need to get is a peice of plastic canvas, which you can get at any craft store or pretty much anywhere. (its the plastic stuff with the little square holes all thru it.) Just stick that in there and there ya go, instant divider! ashley |
