The only ones who sent me some free samples were Jungle Laboratories and Tetra.

Hikari told me that it can't send me any samples due to anti-terrorism rules.

Do the anti-terrorism rules really exist?

I use many different brands. The ingredients determines which food I buy. If one of the foods I use is high in something, then I make sure I have another food that's high in something else. All that matters is that the fish get a good balance of vitamins and other ingredients. The brand name means nothing.

Hikari will give you free samples of the products that apply to your fish. You have to give them a list of your fish, aquariums, and your current foods.

I used Nutrafin Max Color Enhancing for my Harlequins. They have a gorgeous orange and blue sheen to them. For my babies, my african cichlids, I use Plankton Gold flakes from Brine Shrimp Direct ( brineshrimpdirect.com ), FD Mysis Shrimp from them, HBH Super 8 Veggies Flakes, and Hikari Sinking wafers.

There is no best. The way I have been told to judge if a food is good is to check the main ingredients. They should not include binders such as flour or glutens and the likes. A lot of people say Omega One is a great general purpose food and a lot of people like New Life Spectrum for their africans. I use what I use because a friend of mine who has the best looking fish I've seen uses these foods. Ken's flake food is great too. www.kensfish.com . You can pick

Omega One freshwater flakes, veggie flakes, veggie discs, and shrimp pellets

San Fran Bay freshwater multi pack ( bloodworms, brine shrimp, veggie cube - and bloodworm "sheet" where you break it off as you need it.

HBH - crab and lobster bites ( for my cherry shrimp)and African Cichlid "attack" sinking pellets (for a couple loaches because the only cichlids I have don't like it)

Tetra BettaMin for my male betta

Aquadine - freshwater mix- I like these because they sink, and in my heavily planted tank, food floating on top is ignored.

Jungle - antibacterial and antiparasite food

Marineland Bio-Blend and bottom feeder discs

I have a few others I think as well. For dry food, I think one of the best is Omega One though, because of 1) the fishes' response to it 2) the ingredients.

I got Hikari stuff. I don't currently use flakes, so I got no Tetramin. When I get some other surface feeders I might get some again...
