It might work, keep a close eye on them and see what happens I have had some strange combos work very well in the past.

good luck and welcome to FP

The difference between 'involvement' and 'commitment' is like an bacon and egg breakfast: the chicken was 'involved' - the pig was 'committed'."

are you sure your catfish is indeed an upside down cat and not another species of synodontis? I have several different species of synodontis and some of them do swim upside down, but none of them are the common "upside down cat" aka Synodontis nigriventris. I've seen my lace cat (Synodontis nigrita) swim upside down before.

as to their compatibility, syno cats are one of the more common non-cichlid tankmates kept with Malawi cichlids so chances are you'll be ok.

Chances are, if it's an upside down swimming synodontis, it's probably a riverine species that prefers soft, acidic water, thus rendering them fairly poor malawian tankmates.
