The only thing that went into that tank, other than the tadpole months earlier, was some duckweed a few weeks prior. I'm thinking he hitched a ride. Yet, when I spoke to the fish store, there were no rainbows in that tank. He's getting much bigger now (over 1/2 inch) and growing like a weed. The top fin is split just like pictures I've seen of rainbow fish. Do any other fish have such finnage? I'll try to get a pic sometime soon. He does not have that "humpy" look just past the head like many rainbows do. He is very streamline. Likes to dart around the tank wildly when I put bbs in the tank. Very fast little bugger. Ideas? |

As to identifying what kind of goby it is, well, that's difficult. To make sure it's a goby, you should look if it has a single fused ventral fin rather than a pair of ventral fins; a fused one is a sure sign of a goby. However, you might have one of the Blue Eyes (genus Pseudomugil), though the chances of one things hitching a ride is IMO much slimmer than that of a goby. They also have a double dorsal fin and are related to rainbowfish, however do not have that humpbacked look. My Ornatus rainbows (they might be barred rainbows), were very streamlined for the first 6 months, and only my eldest male around a year old is really developing his hump back now. When they are young they are very smooth and linear. Can you post a pic? Come Play Yahtzee With Me! http://games.atari.com Http://www.myleague.com/yahtgames |

I've been wondering if that humped appearance doesn't develop later. He's so fast, he'll be difficult to get a good pic of. I'll try to do so in a few days. |

Here are some pics. They were hard to get and the details are a little blurred. Place further replies in the new thread where the pics are. MODs: Please lock this one down.
