ok heres the deal. ive been managing my tank for about the last 9 months or so, and im getting a little bored of it, it seems to be more of a chore than a hobby lately. what im looking for is an idea of something new that i could do for relatively cheap to spice things up a bit

What size is the tank and what's in there now? Kinda important unless your returning all the stock and ready to get a new tank if someone suggests something outside your size range.

Make sure you have your tank looking good and then show it to a friend. Their amazement might help inspire you more

Post the following details:

[1] Tank dimesnions (length x width x height) - I can compute the volume in gallons from that, but bare volume is less informative than full tank dimesnions;

[2] Current stock.

Problems that increase the maintenance workload can arise from several sources. These are;

[1] Overstockling

[2] Inappropriate stocking

Chances are that with the information provided above, I and several others here can provide suggestions that will improve your aquarium and eliminate quite a few maintenance problems at source, if these are the cause of your disenchantment with the aquarium.

[Edited for typos - again)

How about setting yourself a goal, such as getting your fish to breed?

Personally, I'm in my 3rd year of fish keeping - 2 years with a shared aquarium in a shared house, then after a gap I'm now coming up to a year with my own tank. I'm still very happy, trying to learn as much as I can about good fishkeeping and keeping a happy aquarium. I think I now know the 'basics' of fishkeeping - the upkeep of a tank, how many fish can fit in a certain sized tank (to a point!!!), compatability of fish. My next step is to ensure that I can keep plants in my aquarium as well as my fish (this certainly proves more hit and miss), and then I want to try and get to breeding my fish.

Obviously this depends on whether you really are a 'fishkeeper' at heart. I wanted to learn to play the piano when I was younger, which lasted about as long as your tank has before I got fed up and gave up and I've never looked back at trying it again. If the idea of moving on to the next challenge of fishkeeping or no-one on this site can enthuse you with something to try (personally, I think puffer fish seem to be real characters but it depends if you have a suitable tank / are willing to have a species tank)then maybe you will need to find someone to take over your tank.

I hope someone can re-new your enthusiasm.

Want a goal to aim for? Try this. I'm now clebrating over thirty years of fishkeeping.

And, among the delights I've enjoyed recently has been the madcap spawning of my Panda Corys. Which have become infamous on this Board for their propensity to reproduce at the drop of a hat.

If the funds materialise in the not too distant future (hopefully, this will be an early Christmas present to myself) I will be acquiring some Anomalochromis thomasi Cichlids. Which will hopefully breed as well, and provide me with a little income boost into the bargain.

Be preapred to branch out. Look beyond the 'bread and butter' species that are found in the dealer's aquaria, and who knows, you may find something a little special that fires up your enthusiasm once more. In my case, breeding three generations of Panda Corys was a significant boost to my fishkeeping.
