Hello,

I have a 30g set up that is my first planted tank. It's been up & running for about 3 months now & has just started to get green algea on the rocks & slate.

My only fish are guppies (not planning to keep them long term it was just that I had loads in my 125g & wanted to get the tank up & cycled quickly).

Can anyone reccomend something that would eat the algea but not the plants? I put some plants in my bigger tank & the pleccos gobbled them up really quickly.

I also have some snails in the tank & wouldn't mind a snail eater but I'm not that fussed.

Any idea would be fab - thank you.

justicerulesok,

I would say that you could add a group, maybe 5, Otos.

But it also depends on the kind of algae, as not all fish eat all algae. Do you have more details?

Also, some shrimp might be nice .

And, last but not least, maybe you could take care of it by finding out why you would get algae now and correct the issue.

Hope this helps,

Ingo

I agree with little fish otos do a nice job of cleaning a tank of certain types of algae. I would also recommend SAE's as these are algae eating machines and will eat a large variety of algae. For a 30g I would only get 1 or maybe 2 SAE's for that size tank though as they can grow large.

Chris

PS- SAE = Siamese Algae Eaters, Crossocheilus siamensis

my favorite is still the BN pleco. i know u said other plecos ate everything. i have two BN plecos and they do a great job of mantaining the odd runaway algea patch. My tank is full of plants and they dont eat any of them, just eat the algea of them sometimes.

as for snail eater nothing better then loaches. for a thirty gal yoyo loaches would do great. i hate the little snails they ate all my plants, my fish ate them.

hello,

thanks for the ideas :-)

i think my algea will turn into green hair algea as it came from a floating plant I was given as a gift from a friend who got it from his works pond! I did clean in as best I could But id notice a little on the plant.

The algea is on a couple of pebbles & slate.

My plecs are sailfin plecos - lovely fish but eat anthing that looks like a veggie, lettuice, cucumber, cougette & any plants I put in! They strip them bare.

I might keep my eyes open for some ottos then...

I replied to your other thread, but another suggestion would be a RTBS. I never knew they were algae eaters until after I purchased mine, noticed what he was doing, and did further research. I don't think they're as effective as a groups of otos or a BN, but it's still another option.

I have a BN in my 55g planted tank and he doesn't eat my plants. He happily cleans off the glass and the rocks in my tank. I give him algae wafers to eat along with the algae in the tank.
