I just met a great LFS employee. His name tag said, "Dave 30 years experience". He was very nice when I asked him questions. Then when I asked him about getting a fish the first thing he asked me was if my tank was established. Then he asked me about the size and what else was in it. I was pleasently suprised by this.

I have heard so many people complain about the quality of LFS dealers I had to post that there are good ones out there. Let's all give Dave a hand.

True but was it a big retailer or a small shop? Big retailers tend to be less knowledgable..]

There's a smart guy at one of my LFS's...and a guy who atleast knows something about fish and cycling at another LFS...

I'm glad there's some good people at LFS's, it saves people from wasting a lot of money on fish

I hate when people do that.

I have never really had that happen to me.. but if I bought fish, I would just tell him I had a huge tank (regardless if im buting a tetra, or a iridescent shark).

I feel it is invading priavacy, and it is none of their business.

Probably the only reason I feel this way is because im not "new" with fish.. I have grown up around the tanks and stuff.. I know what I am doing, and I don't need him to make me feel like im a total noobie.

How about we make a post about bad customers? At the LFS, whenever I give advice, customers always argue. Especially the ones who think they can outsmart me when they're arguing over the results of a water test. (LOTS of ammonia and nitrite = NO SALE)

I try to be a good employee like that and I work at Petco... but I have to say that Mike, who has been working there for about two years... is REALLY good at it. Everyone in the community asks if "Mike the fish guy" is in so they can get advice on their tanks. So for the couple months I'm working there I get to sort of be his sidekick. It's cool.

And as for customers, there are lots of stupid customers. Like this lady who wanted to get two gold gouramis (the color morph of the blue ones) for a gallon bowl. I tried for like 20 minutes to talk her out of it, telling her that it would be bad for the fish and that they get to be a good six inches long each... I showed her all the more reasonable options, but she was set on getting those fish and demanded it. Unfortunately we can't really do much about people who are stupid about fish... I know my bosses would not be happy about selling one of the other animals to someone who couldn't take care of it properly, but fish... they just sigh and say "oh well... fish that one out for 'em Rebecca"

Even if it does happen more than we think, it's nice to hear about - you only ever seem to hear about the bad, it's a nice change to hear about the good.
