Hey
Do female guppies have to be fully grown before they can give birth or can they breed when they are smaller?

cheers

Uhm, they can breed at smaller size if that's what you're asking. The babies usually turn out to be smaller also.

I think my guppies were ~three months old when they had their first fry. One had seven... I think the other had the same amount, but they hid behind the filter and all but one were lost. The mothers didn't even have all their coloration yet. The fry were TINY, barely more that two black specks of eyes with a mostly invisible tail.

Here's a pic of the firstborn fry... it's not a terribly good one, because my digicam didn't want to focus on something so small. http://100megsfree4.com/ccatclaws/itsababy.jpg I don't know how she compares to other guppy fry in size. That's hornwort she's hiding in, for size comparison. She was the first fry I found and was probably a few hours old at most.

~Meow. Thus spoke the cat.~

When I have guppies that I raised from birth they tend to have a small batch then get larger as time progresses.

ah yeah cool. thanks for the info.

I've got some baby guppies and I think they've matured but they are not full size yet..well the males have all their colours so I'm assuming the females are at about the same stage of their developement...I haven't seen them looking pregnant or giving birth or anything yet but maybe it happened and I never noticed or the babies were eaten or whatever..
I'll keep an eye on them anyways...
cheers
