And the only "Fairly Oddparents" tank I know of is under 2 gallons - teensy. Your son would probably love a nice betta, who would be pretty and colorful and do well in there.

WAAAAAAAAAY too small for goldfish.

All goldfish are carp, they all will grow to be that large, and or larger. Common goldfish that are sold as if they are nothing grow the largest and need the most room. They're pond fish, not tank fish.

For a 10 gallon tank I'd really suggest sticking with fish that don't get any larger than 2"....especially when we're talking about stocking it for children. Having a goldfish in a tank simply perpetuates the belief that it's okay for them to be in a tank....lets start teaching the kids differently .

Okay, I have to ask a few questions on this thread too, if it's okay.

I know nothing about goldfish, other than when I used to keep them when I was six, and I am sure that was not the right way.

Do ALL goldfish grow (or have the potential to grow) so big? I was thinking of getting my son a few and put into a small tank of his own. (He's five and they have a cool 'Fairly Odd Parents' tank. ). But I am sure the tank wasn't any more than a 10gal. So that would be too small for any goldfish???

Thanks

Really, many fish stores will just tell a customer whatever they can to get them to buy more stuff. If you can find a place that dispenses honest advice, I would keep going back there.

You can always check this site to make sure any info you've gotten is correct or not. I've been told one thing by my lfs, and another from people here. Bottom line, always double-check, it's worth your while.

Wow, thank you so much for your information, i'm very grateful!!

I think i'd better find a new LFS. I was told by mine that i can keep anything up to 4 Goldfish in my 50L tank.

So much for giving beginner good solid information ]

I've got my goldie in with some rosy barbs ATM...he's also boarded with zebra danios (he did try to nibble them a bit @first but quickly learned that no means no ), gold barbs, and albino corys.

However, right now the biggest problem is that goldfish do not belong in small tanks...Minimum really is 55gallons, better is a 75gallons, and leave 10-20 gallons of water per fish....they grow big and need that space for growing. In the case of common goldfish ponds are the best. Unfortunatly the old saying of "a fish will never outgrow the tank" is true...in a way. The outside of the fish will stop growing once it senses that it's out of room...the innards will continue growing and press up against each other and the swim bladder eventually causing an early painful death.

50L is 13US gallons....no possible way to hold goldfish, not really many fish that can go in it. I'd suggest talking with your local fish store (LFS) and seeing if you can make a trade....look around @some of the fish you think you like check their profiles on this site and elsewhere ask around and I'm sure we'll get your tank straigtened out .

I've found that peppered cories can do well at lower temperatures. They won't be able to go as low as the norms for goldfish, but it's still plausible after you get enough space for both.

There are plenty of fish you can keep with goldfish. I keep rosy red minnows with mine. After they get out of the small feeder stage they get about 3 inches long and are schooling fish.

Yeah, you don't have the room for 1 goldie, let alone 3 in that tank.

You should probably return those goldies to the LFS. They just get too big for your tank.

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.

It would probably take quite some time, but they wouldn't take that long to outgrow the tank. Goldfish usually die within a few years, because many goldfish keepers are people who put them in too small tanks, and don't change the water, clean, etc.

Don't worry if you think you're asking dumb questions, I (and many other members) was pretty much clueless when I started the hobby. There's never a bad time for learning.

To be honest, your goldfish will outgrow that tank by themselves. Here's a picture to help prove it:

Do you have the size with liters or gallons? Or, do you have the length/width/height dimensions? We need to know the capacity of the tank, before we can really suggest anything.

Hmmm, it seems whoever told you that is full of baloney. Cories won't be bothered by goldfish, but they prefer higher temperatures than goldfish do. What size tank do you have the goldfish in? If it's large enough, then there are quite a few other fish you could keep.
