Er, just to clarify, I'm not about to go dropping clownfish in freshwater or even brackish. It just sounded like a weird enough idea to ask what it would actually mean.

Could you get a picture? Or ask (multiple) employees if they know what it is? The chance of it being an actual percula is, well ... let's just hope it's not!

No not a clown loach, I own one of those. And they actually might be the best substitute for a clown fish except for that they get up to a foot long and when the one I own outgrows my 25 gallon tank I'm going to give it to my neighbor who has a 90 gallon tank. Currently my clown loach is only about 1-2 inches. But no I really, I really was talking about a freshwater clownfish and it was labeled as "clownfish" in a freshwater tank.

They have freshwater clownfish at my pet store (405 tropical fish) but they look pretty ugly there don't nearly as cool as the saltwater ones.there orange is almost a like a brown rusty color.

Its labeled as freshwater clownfish? What species is it really, a clown loach?

I actually went into a Petco and they had perfectly healthy fish, just horribly overpriced, and the majority of their plants was mondograss, not even a true aquatic..

Ive never heard of people actually acclimating clowns and tangs to freshwater before, thats horrible!!! As said already, there is no freshwater clownfish, so im sure it was some other clown like a clown loach. Find out what he meant though, im curious

Hey guys!

Well, I went by PetCo last night...they had several new fish in the tanks. I didn't see anything like a "Freshwater Clownfish," and I didn't see the guy to ask him.

I did see a Molly fry I wanted to rescue, but the adult Mollies had ick.

I may try to go back in there, but I get upset seeing the fish. If I do, I'll update again.

Good point. I tell people honestly how big their fish get. Most people don't want them at that point, but some (idiots) insist.

Nemo wouldn't have a problem surviving in freshwater for up to about an hour. Might even have been good for him because any parasites on him wouldn't have survived it.

Heh, I wondered about that too...
Oddly enough at work back when Nemo was out we got an email from head office saying that if people wanted a nemo fish we should recommend clown loaches for freshwater tanks (we don't sell saltwater). Of course, nobody wanted one after they found out how big they got! But then again I make a point of telling people exactly WHY certain fish are not suitable for certain people's tanks. Good thing I'm not on commission!

I'm so adjective, I verb nouns!

I don't think anyone thought you were going to, Silver, no need to worry. It's only when you say "I'm going to put my clownfish in freshwater and there's nothing you can do to stop me, meh heh heh heh heh!" that we start to worry.

I was at my local PetCo yesterday, and the department manager mentioned he was getting some freshwater clownfish in this week. He had no clue what they were or anything about them (well, he doesn't have a clue about much of anything when it comes to fish, haha).

I haven't been able to find anything on the internet, except a reference to a clown loach in one place.

Anyone know what they are? I am thinking I'll swing in a few days and take a look.

That was kind of my point - it's awful. However, it can be done in the sense that people can force the fish to live in freshwater for more than, say, a month. Sorry if I wasn't clear: I'm totally against this, it's worse than dyeing.

These fish are not able to acclimate that much. Though they are able to regulate their osmosis to some degree, you cannot truly acclimate such saltwater fish to freshwater. This is my opinion, though. Anything that causes undue stress on the fish or is a condition that is able to kil like that I can't count as acclimated.

Then again, I could be wrong. There is a species of killifish that can adapt it's osmoregulation to that of four times the salinity of ordinary saltwater.

Shini - it can be done, but it's a bad idea. Sort of like you could acclimate certain hardy freshwater species to salt, but ugh, it doesn't work out very well. Supposedly a few people (one was on a fishy mailing list I belonged to) keep tanks of all former saltwater fish - clowns, damsels, even tangs. So, possible, yes - but I feel quite bad for the fish.
