I know it's a stupid question, but why is it a bad idea to have a SW clownfish that's acclimated to freshwater? I mean, if it actually IS acclimated, then why does it work out badly in practice?

Because you CAN'T acclimate clownfish to freshwater. If you can, that's news to me.

It shortens the lifespan, many of them can't take it at all, and it just screws about terribly with all their cells in terms of osmotic control. Would be nice if it worked but ....

Clown loaches perhaps? A lot of people think they look a lot like clownfish. But not appropriate for most people's aquariums.

I just hope they aren't literally getting in perculas that have been acclimated to freshwater - it's sort of possible, and a nice idea in theory, but awful IRL. Probably just Clown Barbs or something normal.

I'm not sure how they order and if they have pictures, so there is no telling. He mentioned "Nemo" when he told me, because kids always want one and a freshwater version would be great.

The guy is really nice, but he doesn't know much. When I asked if they had any liquid fry food, he thought I was growing french fries!

He said Wed, so I'll swing by that night and update here.

my out-of-date copy of "exotic tropical fishes" lists several freswater clown fishes (clown kille, clown knifefish, clown sucker catfish, clown loach). it also describes a clown barb (barbodes everetti) that was readily available at the time.
hopefully those will give you a start on your quest.

Possibles - clown loach, clown pleco, clown killi, maybe some harlequin fish (harlequin rasbora etc). Odd, though, do check back, I'm very curious.
