You could keep it , and layer it with sand and perhaps some plant fertilising substrate, the plants would appreciate the different strata in the substrate. Failing that it looks good around the base of potted cacti... I suppose you could dig it into the garden soil, it might be good for drainage. Failing that , bin it I guess, its probably not a good idea to give it to another aquarist, disease transmission risks and all that.

The sand will get into the cracks of the larger gravel, and settle underneath, raising the black stuff up. Quite an odd phenomenon if you think about it.

I say can the elephantnose idea and get more rainbows Some more turquoise, and a half dozen dwarf neons

Get more hatchets. They would appreciate more friends.

Also, get some tetras if you don't want more rainbows.

I was interested in an elephantnose once, but I was told they can be really sensitive and delicate. I didn't want to buy a $15 fish and have it die. And your right, they really prefer sand.

Get a pair of rams and add some tetras and hatchets.

Don't add sand on the gravel, as it will pass through & compacts at the bottom.

I don't know anything about perch or X. nigri.

The rest looks fine.

For a pleco I suggest a BN. They are good algae eaters but will also eat algae wafers when algae is not always available. They stay around 4 inches. I would only get one though because they do produce alot of waste. They are great.

X. nigri can live quite well in a 55 gallon and is a good choice as most of the fish you wish to keep will be too large for it to eat. All of the rest of the stock is fine as well except for the Ctenopoma (what I assume you mean by Spotted Climbing Perch). It could definitely eat the smaller fish as it gets larger.

If you drop that, you can get all sorts of fish. I see much potential for many more species.

8 common hatchet
2 turquoise rainbow
8 bronze/albino cory
6 dwarf neon rainbow
2 angelfish?
6 glass cats
1 bristle nose(not to keen on the species though perhaps something more exotic?)

That is quite a large list...especially with the water level lowered. I will let others comment on your updated stocking.
IMO I would not add the angels.

I'd reccomend the Albinos. I have some, and they are so cute, and swim into all the fish in my tank. They are all, 'i don't care, move or i will swim into you'.

2 turquoise rainbow

Rainbows are (correct me if i'm wrong) schooling fish, and therefore need to be kept in groups of at least 6.

1 bristle nose(not to keen on the species though perhaps something more exotic?)

http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/154.htm (Golden King Tiger Pleco)

These are all small plecos that should live happily in a 55.

I wouldn't add amphibians into the mix if I were you. It is better to center the aquarium around the amphibians if you want them because they have different feeding needs and produce a large amount of waste.

I'd have to agree with not putting the herps and fish together.

I also believe that you are asking for trouble with that knifefish in there. They get about 8-9" inches long (some sources say longer), and they are highly predatory.

It wouldn't be above them to eat the Dwarf Rainbows and Hatchetfish during the night.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.
