Much better and you are right to stay away from the elephantnose, they are very hard to treat, and as far and the knife, they WILL eat your small fish; I had one that grew to a foot long. And, for sand or gravel, longhair has it right, and that is what I have too, only the sand will come back to the top when vacuuming.
keep it , and layer it with sand and perhaps some plant fertilising substrate, the plants would appreciate the different strata in the substrate.

i made a blue print of the plants will definatly be in there where they are. the rest will be chosen when i goto live aquaria
