Don't want corys as they are the fish i moved out - trying to breed them and it was difficult to make sure they were eating well as the swordtails nicked everything put into the tank. what could i have if anything? i just love buying and introducing new fish. Howabout Boesmani Rainbows, or bolivan rams, or just more swortails howabout black mollies i like them - bit like swords ]![]() Last edited by shekoi at 12-Jan-2005 06:43 www.blooming-brilliant.co.uk |

Recently my fish kept dying one after the other, plop plop plop I found out, after observing the bodies of the deceased, that it was a bacterial infection. I quickly dosed with Mardel Maracyn Plus and voila, no more deaths. My point: that is the problem with keeping a fish tank. Sometimes it is very hard to tell why a fish died, and if it is a disease that goes untreated, it can quickly spread to the rest of your stock. You said you didn't notice anything wrong with the fish that died, but at least you looked. Good habit to get into One more thing: did your water preameters (ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, and pH) check out ok?As for restocking, I wouldn't go with any mollys. They are brackish fish and prefer a bit of salt in their water. The rainbows however, are an excellent idea. I personally prefer dwarf neons, but this is your tank Rainbows are schooling fish, though, so I suggest you get at least 6.HTH and good luck |

They can handle lower temperatures better than hot because they can't do anything about being hot and will either suffocate or cook. Colder temps at least they get plenty of oxygen that can dissolve and if they move around they can warm up a little. There's a curve for every species to show how well the handle different temps. It's a very steep drop at the high end, but it tapers off at the low end. To make a long story short, it's better to keep a fish a few degrees cooler than it might like than a few degrees warmer. ><> |

Water tests came back fine, i even had LFS to double check for me - said all fine. I think it was the temperature - have new heater now. couldn't find any of the rainbows wanted i did see the neon dwarf rainbows - very nice how big is 'dwarf'. i could get more of these, as they are smaller. i think having 6 rainbows might be puching the stocking levels to far. i was thinking of swapping my livebears for a shoal of either rainbow type, then could get larger shoal???? Most of the ones you see in fish stores were bred, born, raised, and sold to you from fresh water with no salt added. Over many generations, this fish has become far removed from any brackish water conditions. It has no need to be in brackish water, nor have salt added to the water. And if you really look at where these fish come from, not all species of molly, nor all places they are found, are brackish in nature. At least 50% of the places they are found in the wild is freshwater with no access to salt or brackish water. I have been keeping a pair of sailfin mollies in freshwater with never a pinch of salt added for some time, and they do swell. They dont need salt added, it is an old wives tale.
