Hello Everybody,

Last week, I went to a couple of fish stores and I saw these beautiful middle and top level swimming fish. They had a silver body, with a black line running horizontal from head to tail fin. The tail was scissored and had black and yellow markings at the ends of the fins. The fish had some red on the face and the body. It had a proper fish shape.

Any guesses?

The specimens I saw were about 2-3 inches, and the LFS said, they would grow to 6-8 inches.

I would have guessed Rummy Nosed Tetras, but if the get
6-8 inches it can tbe that. I have an idea of what it could be again but I can remember the name, I think it was something scissore tail , but it dont have any red on its head.

You know, I can picture this darn fish in my head, but I can not recall the name. It doesn't help much, but at least rest assured that I don't think you are crazy.

I wouldn't be too surprised if it was Puntius denisonii, like this guy (not mine):

There is also a [link=red scissortail]http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/Fishindx/rasbora_caudimac.htm" style="COLOR: #336699[/link].

You might want to try a Google images search to look at more pictures.

Yes, it indeed was this very beautiful fish that I saw. The Puntius denisonii. What is its common name? and how good is the fish to keep?

The main common name is the Denisonii barb. They're not tough to keep; if you can keep SAEs, you can keep Denisonii barbs. They're schoolers that pass 6" and make a beautiful display in a 4' or larger tank. They love planted tanks, nice India-warm water, and low nitrates. There's some speculation over whether the species is actually two separate species or varieties, and there's a lot of work being done now to try and breed them. There was a lovely article on them recently in, I believe, TFH - Ghanzifar Ghori (a DC-area planted tank guy) has been working with them. Also, 'tis the season - expect to see them at random intervals throughout the spring and into the summer, but once fall hits they'll probably stop coming into stores with any frequency.

Oh - actually they're sometimes called Redline or Roseline Torpedo barbs, but Denisonii barbs is more common and more accurate.
