I think I've asked about this before, but I finally have a camera I can take picture of my tank with. So this will be easier.

My tank has all fake decorations, except one large piece of driftwood. I added it last may, and since then, have been getting this red algie on everything, and stringy stuff on the wood itself. So I'm assuming the wood has something to do with this. Here are some pics:

I've been dealing with it so far by changing out the decorations often, but this is the growth after a month and a half, (not the strings, they are much older) and would like to find another safe way. Are there any fish that eat this stuff? I have ottos, but they don't want it. Any advice would be much appreciated!

thanks,
-Beefshank

here, I have a website that shows some diff. types of algae.. I'm not the best at diagnosis, but its worth a shot
http://www.otocinclus.com/articles/algae.html

I've had a bout with green spot algae for a few months, and it seems its never going away..
it might be best to tear down the tank and start from scratch..

I'm sure some others will want to know whether you washed the driftwood before you placed it in the tank?

the best way, (i've found) is to boil water and just let the wood boil in water then i took a scrub brush to it and scrubbed the "stuff" outta it.

good luck!

Thanks!

Well, of the pictures on that site, the closest is the Black Brush algie. I actually have some stuff that looks like smaller tufts of that growing on the outside of my filter intake tube. And it certainly would be impossible to get off a live leaf. I have to soak my fake plants in bleachy water for days for it to come off. But it's not supposed to grow long, so maybe I have several kinds of algie growing.

I did wash the driftwood before I put it in. I don't know how much rubbing I did, and it was to big to boil, but I certainly soaked it in a tub of water for a week, then drained it, refilled, and soaked it for another week. It also came from my LFS, I didn't get it from the beach or anything.
