I have had large schools of more than one species in a 55 and it just looks chaotic. I say go with one large school and of course the cory school

my kribs go fine with my corys and BN and kuhli loaches in my 75G and they have spawned many times.... i did have about 60+ 4cm kribs until recently when i sold/gave them away. its about personal preference, i prefer lots of different fish... 20 neons and 20 zebra danios will look nice but its just 2 species... thats 40 fish, you could have 8 schools of 5 equally sized fish and its more interesting.... unless theres something in there to keep them slightly stressed, they wont school anyway

If I were you, I would stock it like this...

15-20 Cardinal Tetras (or neons if you prefer, but i find cardinals actually to be hardier IME)
8 Cory's
1 Gold nugget Pleco(or any other small-ish pleco)
1 Gold Severum (or green)
6 ottos
1 Pair of Bolivian Rams

Or if you don't want the Severum you could get another large fish that is 8 inches or less in adult length. That's just what I would do, it is totally up to you what you want to do I'm not sure if that's overstocked, but I'm pretty sure it would be alright

I'd go with:
12- neon tetras
7- otonocs
9- one species of cory
3- rubbernose
2- bolivian rams

goes well with the SA theme, and rubbernoses are generally less expensive than BNs (in my area, at least) and are less territorial towards one another.

Bigger schools are cool to watch...but I find that my tetras dont always school.
I think it might be cool if you get a school of several different barbs.

i dont know how big BNs' get
Normal adult bn size is 5 inches.

Bigger schools of less species are usually more fun to watch IMO, while more schools of different species might end up just looking chaotic.

extrovert, IMO those Kribs, if they are a pair will kill the Corys and any bottom dweller you put in with them as soon as the spawn.
Also, I must agree with Janna, less but larger groups will look better and the fish will have better activity in larger groups. I have 20 Neons in my 40 gallon tank, they look great together.

I am getting ready to set up a 55USG long tank. I want to do a community tank. Here is what I would like to get but would like suggestions on numbers and if it will work. The tank has two Pengiun 330 Bio wheel filters. I have not cycled the tank yet but that will come. Just want to get an idea. I would like to have fish at all levels of the tank.

Neon Tetra
Zebra Danio
Bolivian Ram
Corydoras

I am clueless on the number for each. Also if there are any other sugesstions on what would look good. I want alot of small fish that are very active

Sorry this is so long but any help would be greatly appreciated

Nathan

That sounds like a little much for all those schools. Why not get only a few species so you can have larger schools?

For instance:

20 neons
20 danios
2 bolivian rams
8 cories (1 species)

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.

my heavily planted 85G that is going on my wall soonish (i got the wood for the stand today!!!)is going to have

10x neon tetras
10x rummynose tetras
10x harlequin rasbora
10x silver tip tetras
10x lemon tetras
2x kribs
2x BN
4x Bronze corys
4x Pepper corys
4x Kuhli loaches

this is probably overstocked... but all these fish contrast well with each other and i like to have ALOT of fish in the tank.

for your tank why not cut the 12x to 10x and have another species?

10- neon tetras
10- x-ray tetras
10- zebra danios
10- blue danios
*10- another tetra?? or barb???
10- 2 species of 6 corydoras
1 or 2- BN
1 pair- bolivian rams

or cut them down to 8x and have 2 more species?

8- neon tetras
8- x-ray tetras
8- zebra danios
8- blue danios
*8- another tetra?? or barb???
*8- something else small?? or 2/3 gouramis??
8- 2 species of 6 corydoras
1 or 2- BN
1 pair- bolivian rams

just something to think about

Sorry let me clarify. I have a cichlid tank now which is easy to stock. I just want a nice community tank with alot of fish and alot of activity. I think the best way to go is small schooling fish and then add some other non schooling fish. I was reading a post that someone had some neons and some corydoras and someone suggested adding some zebra danios so that you would have fish that swim at all levels, top, middle and bottom of the tank. I would like to have maybe two or three schools of fish but not sure how big the school can be. Heres what I was thinking.

12- neon tetras
12- x-ray tetras
12- zebra danios
12- blue danios
12- 2 species of 6 corydoras
1 or 2- BN
1 pair- bolivian rams

will this overstock the tank? should I choose a different combination? I am also confused I know what I want in my head I just have not seen the set up anywhere I know I dont want the community set up that my church has ( 55 gallon tank with probably 4 texas cichlids and then 8-10 other mixed african cichlids )

I hope this helps to clarify what I am looking for

Nathan
