How long do you keep newly bought fish in "confinement/quaranteen/observation tank" before putting then into main community tank?

It depends how much I like the stuff in the community tank I'm kidding, but only a little. Some tanks I close off completely because I just don't think new additions are worth the risk. Other tanks I'm a bit less precious about.

As for times, it depends what I'm looking for and what I expect to show up. Mostly I get small colourful things so I go with 3 weeks as that'll generally show up ich, velvet, some bacterial issues (surprising how often the big nasty ones will pop up in that time frame, saddleback is an annoyingly common offender, but I suppose the stress of purchase does help push it over the edge) and it also gives a chance to assess personalities to make sure they'll fit in with the current fish.

I'd say that more than 80% of the time, if I'm going to have a problem it shows in the first 6 days. If I get a problem with one fish in the batch, the whole lot of the fish do not move. Any fish in a tank with known problems doesn't make it to the community tank for at least 3 months. Treating big tanks with plants and inverts is unfun and it isn't fair to risk making the current inhabitants sick. If bacterial problems show up in those first 3 weeks, regardless of presentation or apparent virulence, they don't make it into the tank at all.

For me, anything that I'd be keeping in QT longer than 3 weeks (expensive, touchy, irreplaceable etc) would generally be going into a species tank anyway and avoiding a separate quarantine setup. Given the way I isolate my tanks from each other, those are permanently quarantined.

If the question is how long *should* you keep fish in isolation, 3 weeks is an absolute minimum. The longer you leave it, the lower the risk, keeping in mind that you can't eliminate that completely

Only 8 running at the moment, nice easy number. I'm still trumped by Acid and a few other members around here!
