A lot of people mentioned that blue rams are very picky about their water conditions and do not live a very long time. Since I am not experienced at all with cichlids and i wanted to just get involved is there a better kind that would fit in with my 20 gallon planted and a trio of swords?

Blue Rams need just as much room as Bolivians. While Blue Rams are prettier than Bolivians, it comes at a cost. They are very delicate fish. A breeding pair of either would be great in that tank. If you have good water quality Bolivian Rams will be pretty colorful Here is a picture of mine...

any caves that they can hide in
you will need more than 1 cave for them
blue rams only live till about 2 or 3 years

blue rams are great, but they are delicate fish, sensitive to NO3.
it's adviced that you have lots of plants and hiding places in your 20G
other than that, blue rams are great fish

Now some people told me i could go with bolivian rams, although i like the blue better, but what would make them a bad choice?

it would be ok to keep a breeding pair of blue rams in the tank with the other fish. i would not go with bolivian rams though.
