I was at a fish store near my house and they had "Hujeta Gar" in stock. I was quite taken with these fish. I am unfamiliar with this species of fich although I do know they are highly predatory. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Hujeta gar, otherwise known as a freshwater barracuda, have the scientific name is Ctenolucius hujeta. They get about 20 cm (~9" long, so are appropriate for predatory tanks as small as maybe 55 or 75 gallons if kept alone. Judging by the body shape, it's generally an inactive fish, being an ambush hunter that charges prey. Generally these types of fish will needs plants to hide in to feel comfortable, with floating plants being the most appropriate. However, I've read that keeping it in groups is best, which makes the necessary tank much larger. It may be difficult to get these fish to eat anything other than live foods, which presents an added cost, not just for food but also the risk of disease introduction. This is an added concern with adult specimens; it may be easier to wean young fish.

Thank you for the response. With the little bits of info I have come across I have realized that the fish is probably not the most suitable fish for me to keep. I will continue investigating. Thank you!
