I have an 120gal Cichlid tank with three clown loaches, ranging from 6" to 3.5". I recently notice a new loach about 2" long. Also, the largest loach had lodged itself inside of an artifical trunk. I'm not sure if loaches are egg layers or live bearers, so I need help. I dislodged the fish today but I was wondering whether or not to remove the trunk because new fry may be located inside.

I think that Clown Loaches are egg layers & rarely spawn in captivity.

So far there are no known captive breedings going on with clowns They should be egg layers like other loaches...if you are able to cause them to breed in captivity, you should take some notes...

Did I read that right though? You had 3 clown loaches between 3.5 inches and 6 inches, and now you have an additional clown loach that is only 2 inches? That means you now have 4? Not to be ugly orcrazy are you sure you didn't buy another one and forget? I somehow had forgotten I had 2 bn

If it were me I'd leave the driftwood in the tank...mine like to swim into it upside down as well, and always seem to get out ok...

Let us know, heidi

Hmmm... breeding in captivity is quite rare, I've read experiences where people have gone to great lengths to try and simulate their natural habitat to try and get them to breed with no success. If I'm not mistaken they are egg-layers. I would be very surprised if yours bred. Mainly because of the size of the new one. Loaches are very slow growers, it is said that they average about an inch a year after their growth spurt the first year. But even in their growth spurt they won't gain two inches, one of the websites that jason posted it says that they grow an inch quickly than the growing slows. I have seen these fish in my LFS's being sold when they were 1/2 inch to 3/4 of an inch, so I know they start off very small so if your new loach is around 2 inches it has long since gotten over the fry stage (by probably a year).

As for the loaches that were lodged in the driftwood. That is actually their preferred home. The hiding spots that Clowns prefer is usually slightly bigger than they are and very dark. I had a piece of artificial drift wood that was hollow and the loaches had wedged themselves down so far in the roots (barely bigger than their body) that their nose and whiskers were poking out of the drain hole. This scared me at first because I swore they were dead because I never saw them, after futher inspection they could easily manuveur in and out of those caves.

In fact I read (forgot where, I can find the reference if needed) that is how the clowns are caught in the wild. People put hollow bamboo shoots into the water and eventually make a lot of ruckus and the loaches find the bamboo a suitable hiding place. In fact I use a similar technique when I have to catch my loaches

thanks for the great idea on how to catch my motley crew...I think it might be easier than the 6 ft run back and forth:%)

Ha Ha, yeah, I had to unplant my tank everytime I had to catch mine, than one day I realized that they all went and hid at the top of this fake rock that I had for them. So one day when we had to catch them we scared them into the rock and quickly flipped the rock upside down and pulled it out of the water. Presto, all 6 loaches caught no disturbance to the flora.
