I'd say go with Guppies!!! :%) Mine are always very active, or maybe it's the fact that they are always begging for food :%) But, unless you are willing to have tons and tons of babies only get males...don't think just getting females will be safe, if they've mated then you are in for fry for 6 months, and from there...

Danios are very active fish, they're always swimming around. Zebra danios only grow to around three inches, so you'd be able to fit a school of six in your tank.

EDIT: Danios aren't tetras, and they're not even characins. By "non-tetra-ish", are you saying that you don't want any small, schooling fish? In that case, maybe try a paradisefish. I'm pretty sure they are active fish.

Electric yellow cichlids are very fun and active.
They don't grow so big and not so mean.
The best thing is that they are beautiful and atractive.

I like the idea of the electric chiclids.

Can I get a small group of them, or can I only have 1 in the tank?

EDIT**

Sir, they look like tetras, and i dont want anything that look like tetras (like guppys also)

v, I'm not being silly or anything, but what kind of fish shape do you want? I mean, tetras and cichlids and guppies are shaped, like, well, fish. I guess you are stuck with looking at the oddballs or like crustaceans or some other pet if you dont want a "fish-looking" fish. I guess I am looking for an example of what you mean by a fish that doesn't look like a tetra?

I want a fish like a gourami, or anglefish, or the chiclid like someone mentioned.

Not like a tetra that gets 5" long, that looks like a mid-swimming kuhlii loach.

WHen I was at the LFS, there was a tank full of opline gouramis. They looked sweet, and i wanted to buy around 5 of them to put in my tank.

I talked to some people, and they said they would all just kill each other in my tank.

Is there any other cool fish that i can put around 5 in that doesnt get too big (maby 4" I would prefer them to be top-mid swimmers, because my tetras are so boring and just hide all day.

Any help?

What about paradise fish? Or a dwarf cichlid or smallish gourami?

EDIT: realized you want 5...

Personally I'd have to say Giant Danio's. They have great shimmery colorations, don't stay small, hence the name 'Giant' and can be kept best in a school. Plus they are a mid-top dweller, which is what you said you were looking for. If paradise fish can be kept in small groups I think they'd make a good choice too though. Considering they're labyrinths, they'd be on the surface a lot as well. Great colors too, ask Theresa for piccies. I don't think males can be kept together though...
Angels might be nice, but they need tallish tanks, can you provide that? Also, angels with tetras can sometimes be a bad situation...what kind of tetras do you have?

I'm not sure about your stock and tank size, so that'd be helpful.

Providing they'd be compatible with the rest of your fish, what about a school of corys? You could go with a larger species, like bronze. I have albinos that are constantly buzzing up, down, all over the place. :%) They're cute too!

No corys? What about a school of tiger barbs (or another type of barb)? Yes they get nippy, but when in a large enough group, they keep their agression within the school.

Barbs are out? I have one more suggestion: rams. They're gorgeous, small, peaceful (except when breeding of course, as is the nature of all cichlids), active cichlids that are good in community tanks, as long as you properly care for them.

Hope that gave you some ideas.

well if you like the look of regular danios, then i'd have to second the Giant Danios suggestion. I had them for about a week or so (eventually gave them back, they didnt fit in with the plan I had for the tank). But they NEVER stopped moving, looked like little torpedos moving through the water. Grow to about 4" or so, but make sure you give them room to swim. I think of them as the fishie equivilant of dalmations - hyper, and they need room to move!

In my 55g I have 3 Neon Rainbowfish and they are always swimming around. They are a very good choice I think.

I would go with Rainbows or Giant Danios.
