The defense mechanism for hatchets is jumping, so keep the lit tightly closed.

Mine eat anything offered, flakes, micro pellets, frozen daphnia, frozen brine shrimp, and frozen blood worms.

I have made no effort to breed them, and can not add any knowledge on the subject.

Good luck with them.

They can be pretty skittish, especially if they've only been in a tank for a short time. After that, though, I find that these fish are much less shy. They seem to readily accept a wide variety of foods, and appreciate some form of cover near the surface. As the above post stated, they are also very good jumpers. Just keep a careful eye out for any hatchets that decided to explore the unexplored and leap from the tank.

A really nice fish, that as you know fills in that many times empty space near the surface.

It's been several years since I kept any, but mine readily accepted any type of food and relished small insects, like fruit flys on the surface of the water.

A bunch of nice floating plants helps to make them feel secure and also helps to give them a bit of shade to hang out in which mine always seemed to appreciate.

They seem to be able to find even the smallest opening in the cover to make a leap to safety, so make sure you cover all available escape routes. Definitely not a fish for an open top aquarium.

Water sprite (Ceratopterus thalictroides), makes a great floating plant, it's what I primarily used.
