Hi i'm a college student and looking for ways in which to fill up a tier system tank in my college as it is very basic in terms of fish.

Each tank is 48" long and 12" wide on each level the two bottom tanks are divided into 2 x 24"

So far in the top tank we have:-

2 Glass Catfish
3 Corydoras (2 bronze and 1 albino)
3 Serpae Tetras
4 Swordtails (2m and 2 f)
3 Guppies (2 males and 1 female i think)
and a couple of young silver mollies all of which have been donated by students in college (including myself.)

I want to jazz the tank up abit as it looks bare, we can't have live plants to much to keep em growing and the up keep so we have plastic plants instead.

Any suggestions??

Something that requires less demanding water conditions and is easy to keep.

I was think of tetras of some kind i.e black neons or glowlights, how many would you suggest in a tank of this size??

I would suggest upping the school size on both the corydoras and the serpae tetras. Both of these species, but esp the tetras do best kept in a school and the absolute minimum number would be 6. More is merrier! The fish feel safety in numbers and they are more fun to watch besides.

So, the tanks, if they are 12"*48"*16" they would be ~ 40 gallons. Divided in half, they would be ~20 gallons per side. Lots of possibilities. Don't rule out live planst entirely. If you can set the lights on timers, try adding some java fern and anubias. Both do great even in very low light, just be sure not to bury the fleshy rhisomes. You can even attach them to driftwood or other hard furnishings to landscape the tank.

Maybe check out the cookie cutter 20 gallon tank for some fish ideas:

More corys! Corydoras are absolutely cool little fish, that do very well in large numbers. I'd say get at least 3 more albino's. Though the bronze and albinos do hang with each other.

I would'nt bother getting anymore swordtails or guppies. If you have males and females of each species, your bound to have about 3 billion guppies and swordtails within a year

Glowlight Tetras are very pretty additions to any community tank (Providing you don't have Oscars or Pirahnas and stuff like that ) or some Neon Tetras! These would look really pretty in that tank and are very peaceful! Oh yes, and do get they corys. I guess my point in this is to get Tetras or Corys!!!!

EDIT: Oh yes, get live plants!!!
