Hi all, just wanted to find out what sort of puffer it is we have here?
We were sold it as an MBU Puffer, however, from all the photos we've seen (s)he appears to be a Nile puffer. He has straighter lines rather than curly lines that the mbu's have.
Here are some photos.

and

We currently have him in a 4ft tank, and will shortly be upgrading, what sort of tank will he need (apperntly niles get to 18" max, and around 8-10" in aquriums, and 30" max for mbus). If he's a nile, would 6ft long, 2ft high, 2.5ft wide tank be ok for him when he's full sized?
Thanks.

Looking at this site: http://puffer.proboards2.com/index.cgi?board=photo&action=display&num=1088346564
It appears the first 3 pictures are MBU puffers, (clearly not the same as our puffer), and the next 3 are Nile puffers, which is almost identical, so I guess he's a Nile puffer?
Which is good news, as we were looking to rehome him when he got too big, but we can easily get 8ft+ tank for the nile (if he is one!)

yours looks to be a Fahaka puffer also called a Nile puffer I believe. The scientific name is Tetraodon lineatus. Max size is around 18" and the minimum recommended tank size is 125 gallons (6' x 18" x 22" but a 180 gallon (6' x 2' x 2') would be much better.

Great, thought as much, the guy in the LFS kept say "no, it's not a nile puffer, I've seen nile puffers when I've been diving"..blah blah, well anyhow, they do look similar, but the patterns are definately different, and the size too!
And isn't he the cutest fish ever? Look at the eyes and that lovely smile on his face, who would think he's so teretorial and a fin nipper? lol
He follows people around the room (along the front of the tank) begging for food, and would eat until he popped =)
