Its all to apparent to me that people are to quick to blame the shops or stores they brought their fish from for the death of their fish. Can you hear it know " I don't like so and so their fish always die" and yes guys and girls I was one of the biggest culprits when I first started out with my fish but now it is all to apparent to me that it was nothing to do with where the fish came from but rather my mistake for not learning enough about the topic before I went head long into it. This my friends is the biggest problem with new fish dieing on you not the shops or stores you brought them from. Oh yes I know there is the odd shop or store where the quality of the fish are very poor but my point is before just rushing in there and setting up a tank and plonking some fish in it go out there and get as much information as you can about the topic because its not as easy as just setting up a tank and plonking fish in it. There is plenty of information out there on the web as well as this site (which has been my main source of learning) for you to become an expert before you make the first steps of setting that tank up. You will be glad you did because you won't make the mistakes I have. I lost so many fish which means money loss not to mention the pain and suffering I put the fish through. Yes pain and suffering nothing to do with the shops or stores I brought from at all. So of you go and learn now and please learn through my mistakes. That's it folks that's my little moan over with and maybe in a funny kind of way I might just have saved a few fishes lifes through my moan. Thanks for listening to me.

Well said tessa38uk, I totally agree with your moan. If more people researched what they where doing befor hand, a lot of illness and deaths could be avoided, and yes, I too made the same mistakes. Sadly I think its a case of no one looks for help until things start to go wrong, and then all of a sudden you find out there is a whole lot more to keeping our fishy friends than you ever thought possible, I know thats how I felt when I found out that I was supposed to gravel vac, test water and so on, all of this can seem a little daunting to a newbie...But I have to say, once learned, I personally have found it all to be quite interesting, and instead of just having fish too look at, I realized I have a hobby with much more to it, than I first thought, and now find it a pleasure, some times a challenge, but definatly more rewarding than befor I new the basics.

I agree...while yes there are a few shops in my area where I won't buy fish from (one has ich in almost every tank) there are also ones that do make an effort to give additional information for the buyer. Adult sizes and temperment are written out on the cards. While it would be nice if more info was given, it cannot be expected.
After all, just because you buy a car with standard transmission you can't expect the dealiership to teach you how to drive it.

Hear hear. I'm glad That I looked for info on this website too. That said my parents and my brother ignored me when setting up my brothers 5gal and his glowlight tetras are affected by nitrites. Maybe they'll listen to me in the future
