Well after weeks of drooling and debate, i decided to house a 9" bichir in my 29g holding tank until i can get my large tank set up. The LFS had it labeled as P. Congensis (sp?) but i am rather convinced it is actually a p. bichir bichir. Does anyone (Toirtis ) know if only P. bichir bichirs have 3 solid, very distinguishable black spots on the rear fin (not sure, is it considered a cadaul fin?)? I am uploading a pic now as i post this. One issue though. I have 2 2" severums in with the bichir that i used to cycle the tank and was hoping to raise and put in my large tank someday. I bought the bichir knowing the risks of it eating them, BUT the tables are now turned. The severums are picking (more like a sucking) on the fins of the bichir. The bichir just sits there and takes it, but i was pretty astonished by this (and by the fact he isnt retaliating).

Yup, it's public. That's a funky looking fish.

Sorry, I can't offer you any help though.

Color and pic quality isnt too good. I needed to take the tank light off to float the bag so i couldnt use the traditional fish photography techniques of tank light on, room lights off .

looks like P. bichir lapradei, but of course Toirtis will be able to confirm. You're lucky it's not a P. endlicheri congicus as I believe this is the largest growing species reaching a max. of close to 3.5-4' in length. P. endlicheri endlicheri also grows huge but not as big as P. e. congicus. I believe P. b. lapradei grows to 12-14" but I can't remember for sure.

The severums are picking (more like a sucking) on the fins of the bichir. The bichir just sits there and takes it, but i was pretty astonished by this (and by the fact he isnt retaliating).

If the severums do anything to hurt the bichir, I'm sure he'll move and get away from them. Or, he'll just turn around and swallow them.

Jason

It wouldnt be in the bichirs nature to do anything as it is an ambush predator.
