This is something that has been running through my head for awhile. Can a 10 gallon tank stunt a fish that is suppose to hit 3"?

I don't think it would stunt it, but I wouldn't recommend it either.

i would think that a fish becomes stunted when they are kept in a tank that is smaller than the lenght the fish should obtain.

A ten gallon tank probably wouldn't stunt the growth of a 3" fish, but it's still too small of a tank for a fish that size. A three inch fish would be much happier in a fifteen gallon, or more.

Stunting happens when a fish is in a tank that is way too small for it, not when the fish is literally the size of the tank.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

Depends on the fish. If it's something active like a larger tetra or danio, yes. If it's a small cichlid, anabantid, or less active catfish, then probably not, as long as the tank wasn't overstocked overall.

Thanks for the replies, everyone.

I had Platies and Cories in mind. I've had my Peppered Cories in a 10 gallon for about a year now and the largest is only about 2" with the tail. And some people have said they have 3+" Peppered Cories in a 75 gallon, that are less than a year old.
I also have 2 Platies, for about 5 months, and I haven't noticed much growth with them either. They are also about 2" with tail.
Do fish just grow slower when kept in smaller tanks?

"mabey they are not receiving enough food and that is why they are not growing."

From what I read on these forums, other people do feed more to their Cories.
But, for a few reasons, I don't want to feed more. First, it takes my Cories around a half hour to finish the amount I feed. Second, there is always a decent amount of poop on the sand by the end of the week. And since they are the only fish in this tank, I know the Cories are getting all the food. And they should be getting proper nutrition, I feed 6 different types of food.
I will be getting a 30 gallon in a couple months, so hopefully they will grow more once they're in there.
