Ok, so my last male killi apparently jumped ship, because he wasn't in there when I did my water change last night!

However, I DID find a suprise waiting for me, I saw a little baby killi (unfortunatly I saw him AFTER the water change, so who knows how many went down the drain *cries*).
I put him in a breeder net inside the tank. But then I saw another one, half the size of the other fry... so tiny I could barely see him. But I THINK I netted him and put him in the breeder net. Problem is, I can't find him sense then, I don't know if he was so small that he was able to swim out through the mesh of the breeder net. The bigger one is still in there.
I have the filter turned way down.

Can these guys eat crushed up flakes? They have obviously been living on something with out me knowing they were there!

Will the mother killi eat these guys if she see's them?
I guess my big aggressive male left me a present before leaving =P.

Most killies will eat their young if they can find them. If there are plants in the tank, they could have been living off of infusoria. They generally wont eat crushed flake, it would be best to give them something live such as microworms or baby brine shrimp.

I have some BBS that I can make up. My adults have always just lived off of flake & pelleted food, and the very occasional bbs or freeze dried plankton.

Yes there is a plant in the tank.

Thanks!

With all the killis I have bred, it has been my expeience that most of the parents will not eat their fry, yes they will all eat the eggs, but not the fry. However, it is good if you keep the parents well fed as well, as they will be even less likely to eat the fry. I keep plants in the killi tanks, and I know there is infusoria in there. But I always start them out on powdered flake and depending on the species, micro worms. They will grow quicker on the micro worms. As for the BBS, this should be fine if they are about a week old. The problem with BBS sometimes, is the BBS can eat some of the very small fry of some fish. But, killis are large enough for this not to happen. They will be fine in the tank.

HTH.....

Well it looks like my very aggressive male (the one who killed everyone in the tank save this one remaining female) has so far left me 5 beautiful fry!
I'm so very excited, they are still too young to sex them, but I might offer them up for sale to someone who's interested, or I might just keep them, not sure yet

What size is your tank, and how much room, or how large is that plant in there? And, what kind of plant is it?

Also, do you know the scientific name of your fish?

Acidrain: This tank is a 5.5G, the fry are about 4-5mm long right now. Last I counted there to be 6 of them.

The species is Fundulopanchax Gardneri - Misaje'.

I don't remember the name of the plant off the top of my head, it's partially red and green, so it's a fairly high light plant, as tall as the tank itself. Probably takes up 25% of the tank I would say with it's foliage.

The fry are on crushed pellet, flake, and bbs now, all still in their breeder net.

I need to find homes for some of these guys. I do not have any extra tanks for them right now.

Crushed/powdered flake is what I start mine on. You should have no problem getting rid of them to others, as they are a nice looking fish. If nothing else, see if the place you got them from will buy them back and give you credit for them. Most lfs will.

AcidRain: Remarkably I've only had one person interested in these fish at all *whom I would actually consider giving fish to*.
I'd rather not give them to any of my local fish stores... I just don't trust them enough for that. Admittedly I have returned a couple fish before, aggressive problematic fish who would either be euthanized or sold to a store.
I'd rather buy another couple tanks then euthanize the fry.

Have you ever thought about joining a club? The AKA (American Killifish .) has many members, and listings of fish for sale. As well as much knowledge about this family of fish.

Yes I have thought about it, and have visited that site before.
It basically comes down to the fact that I'm a poor bas... and I don't normally have time to commit myself to something like that.
I do have time to post a thread on "who wants this fish" now and then.

But, whatever
