I went shopping today. For rocks. I came back with fish, as you do I have more on order. *sigh* Naughty bad addict.

Anyway, while on my trip I found a tank with some "Flying Foxes" in it. They just didn't look the same as most. The black stripe did not go to the end of the caudal fin, but it did go onto it. It definitely had the lighter, thinner stripe above the black one.

The most interesting thing was that the fins were black/white/red. The black and white I could understand, but I've never seen any with that vibrant a red (or white for that matter). Is it the same species and this is just a different show of whatever makes the fins yellowish?

Are these still flying foxes and if so is this a specific variation or have I just been seeing lousy specimens these last few years?

This profile lists red as one of the colors in the flying fox. http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_fox.php

Any chance the store would let you take a picture?

Hmm, they might let me get a photo, I'll do some sucking up

The photo looks similar, definitely the same fish if you use that as a comparison, but jack that colour up and increase the contrast a bit. I never expected 'red' to mean actual bright red

It'd have to be something like that Mezzy.

I would have bought a pair, but they looked a wee bit on the aggressive side. Not good with guppies and bettas, it would have been tail soup

well, by your description of some of the coloration and patterns, have a look see if this may be the culprit...
http://fishbase.com/Summary/SpeciesSummary.php?id=22832
the sketch is well.... sketchy, but descriptions of coloration might be close, here is another pic I found.
http://www.geocities.com/kuchingensis/rasbora.html
the pic is 2/3 down the page and the caption states that they may be juvies, so maybe not fully colored-up yet, or maybe a varient of what you saw at the shop.

Just a guess... hehehe

Definitely not rasbora, but you have the markings bang on! Well done! It looked like the 3rd sketch down.

Hey Callatya,

Went to one of my frequented LFS over the weekend, guess what, they had 6 FF's with the red-black-white colors in the dorsal and caudal fins... WAY COOL !!!, tho the colors on these guys probably aren't as vivid as the ones you saw, but very cool none-the-less.... hehehe, half tempted to get a few !!!
