I remember reading somewhere that it's the bass(lower frequencies) that effects the fish the most. Bass travels through objects, that's why a subwoofer in the trunk still sounds very load. Where as, high frequencies deflect off of objects a lot more.

I always thought mine actually liked it but who knows. I once had a 3 legged dog who loved AC/DC and Ozzy...hed wag his tail and everythin n when they screamed he barked...in a happy way though.



Well anyways, so you guys think that if the tanks are far enough from the speakers that the fish shouldn't be bothered? I figured they just jumped cuz it caught them off guard...I know when something loud comes about all of a sudden I jump too.

I was just having a PM conversation with Babelfish about this.

My bettas are on an entertainment unit (well, coffee table, student furniture ), on a shelf underneath the TV. On either side of the unit are two large speakers hooked up to the stereo. We get our TV sound (we like movies loud too!), CD player and my BF's sound equipment (he's a DJ - this means very loud synths with plenty of bass!) through these speakers. The bettas don't seem bothered, ever. They don't act any differently when there's sound and when there's silence, they don't start when sound suddenly comes on. I can see that if a tank were right next to a speaker, on the same bit of furniture, it could be too much. But having travelled along the floor, up the legs of the unit and across the shelf where the tanks sit, I think most of the vibration is lost by the time it gets to them.

I play everything from Godsmack to metallica to GnR and everything in between.... loudly.... and I have never lost a fish from it. I think they actually dance .

This is just me, but I think that anyone who blames the death of a fish on loud music or occasional accidental bumpings is crazy. That's like saying that being cold will make you sick. Or that more weird things happen on nights with full moons.

I've been usin my headphones and all seems to be good.

My tin foil barbs died from stress of our vacume hitting the legs of the tank stand. My wife did it!

Have you ever tried wearing headphones while playing air guitar? And besides it gets caught in your long hair and bandanas...

I was just wondering cuz theres a 30 gallon, 2 10 gallons, 2 1 gallon n a 5 gallon tank in my room...and I'm what you call a...metalhead, chainer, rocker, whatever you would like to call it and I like my music loud lol so does it do anything bad? I see them jump when it first comes on but after that they act normal...so is it bad?

Well then I'll just keep a Mozart disc on hand for acclimations then Calilasseia, it'll keep both the fish and me calm .

However, a scientific experiment found that Mozart played at moderate volume is very relaxing for fish ...

I have to say it is a choice of the music or the fish long-term. Priorities must be decided and as you have so many in your room, I'd say you have the commmitment to the fish and hopefully will play the music elsewhere from now on.

I'm sure its possible its Axl killin them...you've heard his voice right? lol I have interesting tastes in music which include loud guitars, banging drums and all that stuff your parents love to hate lol

I do recal a club in Perht having a few tanks around the area, and pretty much by then end of a nasty drum and bass gig at least one fish would be belly up.

Maybe it was belly up beforehand, but nonetheless, the volume inside the club, I'm suprised people weren't going belly up!

although sound travels faster in water and looses much less pressure as it goes along, almost all of it bounces from the surface, like a sound mirror (this is the reason why when you dive you hear nothing of the outside airy world. this is exactly for the same reasons light reflextions occur).
on the other hand, the glass of the aquarium is like a big membrane, transmitting the vibration to the water. it is not so "efficient" that way, though, so the vibrations in the water are not that strong.
my guess is making sure your tanks don't sit on the same shelf as the speakers or having them sit on a special piece of furniture that isn't attached to the wall and maybe ensuring that the speakers are not directed perpendicular to the glass surface of the tanks should be enough.
the first will prevent the fish get their vibrations from the wall, which is MUCH stronger than getting them from the air, and the second will make almost all sound bounce off of the glass surface, which is quite a poor membrane (noticed how things sound behind a closed window?)
